Seven minutes into the scrimmage, DeYona goes down with an apparent knee injury. Helped off the court. F!!k.

1st Q. Orange 17 White 8. Rori-Orange. Madison-White at PG. Gisella also playing some point.

2nd Q. Women vs men. Men (White) are getting schooled.

Half: O-39, W-23.

Madison = who? I can't think of a Longhorn in the last 30 years that approaches her in all aspects.

End of Q3. Not playing: Amo, Jordana, Abbie, Tiona. DeYona has not yet returned to the bench. (Jordana has been playing with brace.) Nice touch on midrange.

Way too early projected starters (assumes D is out): Rori, Amina, Shaylee, Madison, Taylor.

Vic's post game remarks: Thanked the men for their voluntary efforts. "These men get nothing" (from the program).

No mention of DeYona (she did not return to the court).

Couldn’t be there. Absolutely devastated by the Gaston injury. Sincerely hope it’s not serious and she recovers quickly, but a friend at the game said she was in real pain.

I was at the scrimmage and from my vantage point, I believe she injured her left ankle. Regardless, sending positive thoughts for a speedy recovery.

I was at the scrimmage. I kept looking for D to make it back to the bench, even on crutches and she didn't. Near the end of the halftime, Vic was near the tunnel talking to two of the people who helped her off the court on one foot (and into the locker room) and what I assumed was the team doctor. He was wearing a suit. They stood in a circle talking for quite a while. Vic was not smiling at the end of the conversation when he had to get back to the game.

Looks like the ankle is correct. Either way, the "speedy recovery" part is what she deserves.

How did the injury to Gaston occur? Jumping and landing? Non-contact injury? Running and planting? Stepping on a teammate's foot?

So, my opinion on the play of each player:

Gonzales - more confident 3 point shooter. starter for sure.
Harmon - same as before. taking more pull-up jumpers. must have been an emphasis on the coaching staff. But sometimes, there was no one ahead of her to pass to anyway.
Gaston - Ugh
Herron - Dressed but didn't play. I'm pretty sure the coaches told her she wasn't going to even enter the game.
Holle - same Shay. scorer and defender. but she was getting a couple of fouls called on her
Codio - took over point in the 4th and Vic was in his "teaching mode". She wouldn't do something right and Vic would be pointing at a part of the court he wanted to make a play or a decision at. Was sloppy with the ball, having it taken from her or making a pass that got stolen. massive hardware (bracing) on her right leg. Vic finally got tired of it and made Booker play PG the last 4 minutes of the 4th
Muhammad - quiet, but got some points in
Faye - playing MUCH better under the bucket. So many times last year she would be under the bucket and just throw up a ball thinking it HAD to go in and missing. More patience and more buckets in her second year
Maul - Not too bad. For having another massive brace on her leg, did well as PG for periods of time.
Moore - on the bench, but not even dressed to play. I don't think Vic will play her until 2024
Graves - I'm not sure....was she even there?
Mwenentanda - played okay. better than a confused freshman, but not going to be a starting 5
Booker - Think of her as a slightly skinnier Moore. active defense and can contort her body to lay the ball into the bucket for the ball. with Moore out for a bit longer, Booker will be a starter
Jones - played much, much better under the basket. Like Faye, better concentration under the bucket
Boutilier - like Herron, dressed but with no expectation by them that they were ever going into the scrimmage.

Unsure. There was just a bunch of players near the corner and then when they dispersed you could see Gaston on her side in pain and clutching her left leg. The only consoling thing I could think to myself is that I've heard players scream in agony when they've torn their ACL and at least I didn't hear that from Gaston. But, I'm not a doctor either.

I've thought about this question after the injury occurred. Gaston was on offense and to my recollection there was a missed shot. Gaston was about 8-10 feet from the basket near the baseline area (not in the paint). I believe it was a non-contact injury. She may have jumped and come down on it wrong or came down on someone's foot. It all happened very quickly. As others have stated, Gaston was in intense pain, holding her ankle while laying on the court.

The crowd was stunned and silent. Although these injuries can happen any time, on or off the court, it's certainly unfortunate when it happens at a pre-season, intra-squad, scrimmage.

I was at the scrimmage...there was a lot of traffic in the area where the injury occurred. Essentially a loose ball scramble, and D was turning in mid-air ala a turnaround jumper and came down wrong. From my angle, her left ankle looked dislocated, but I hope I'm wrong about that. Her immediate body language after she hit the ground was not encouraging though.

I was also at the "welcome back" dinner last week and wasn't surprised that Tree didn't play based on Vic and Tree talking about her heart issues and the road to recovery. Tree admitted to some mental struggles with returning to form on top of getting back into physical shape.

I liked what I saw from Maul and could see her in the rotation off the bench. Amina and Jak have developed as well, and Vic spoke highly of Amina's ability to D up the 1-4 spots.

Oh, to be clear, when I say "loose ball", it was more like there were multiple people battling for a rebound...the ball was in the air and there were at least 2 other players near D trying to grab it when the injury happened.

An ankle dislocation requiring surgery would be just as shocking as a bad knee injury. Hopefully, that is not the case as DeYona would be gone for the season otherwise.

I was watching this entire exchange and was wishing I could read lips! I did see the trainer walk away and give the fingers crossed sign to some fans sitting nearby. Hope we get good news today.

Graves was there in a walking boot (left foot, I believe).

Madison's ball-handling is top notch. Once she gets more comfortable with the offense and where her teammates will be, she'll be amazing to watch. Not sure if she's a starter from day one even with Gaston injured, but she'll definitely be the first off the bench if she isn't starting.

I think we can collectively breathe D is on Instagram not wearing a boot and at the elementary with other players so might have just been a roll and we can tear and move on
