This morning's N. Y. Times crossword puzzle included the following clue: "Scathing review attributed to Ambrose Bierce."

Answer: "The covers of this book are too far apart." :)

I've thought about subscribing to the NYT just for the crossword puzzle.

I hear it's a doozy.

It's great--each week, the puzzles get progressively harder from Monday and Tuesday (which are very easy) through Saturday, which is a killer. Each Sunday's puzzle is about on a level with Thursday's in difficulty, but the Sunday puzzle is much larger. The best thing about the puzzles, however, is that most of them are so witty and humorous (like the example in my original post). I subscribe (just to the puzzles), and it's entertainment money well spent, imo. Another witty constructor, who sometimes has puzzles published by the Times is Brendan Emmett Quigley--you can solve three of his puzzles for free each week (MWF) at this site--Link

Great thread. Love what Will has done with the puzzle during his tenure.

Do you read Rex Parker's blog? (rexwordpuzzle.blogspot.com)

There was a recent puzzle with Ambrose Bierce as the answer to a clue; the Ambrose part where "rose" was all in one square.

The Daily Texan syndicated the NYT Crossword when I was in school, and I've been hooked ever since. The subscription is about $35 a year, but the iPhone app is only $10.

Rex parker is one of the first things I read each morning.

I find the one in the AARP magazine a little easier.

I hate it when they put an entire word in one square. WTF is that? Should require mandatory prison time.
The week before it was fraternities. They had "alpha" and "theta" and other various Greek letters in one box. Stupid concept.

SPOILER ALERT--

Those of you who hate rebus crosswords, don't go near this morning's tough NYT puzzle by Elizabeth Gorski.

Love you, Elizabeth. Keep up the good work.

Today's was good. I got it so it must not have been too difficult.

Next: getting Friday's done on a consistent basis.
