Thanks to all of you who posted suggestions on my earlier thread. It was a fantastic weekend with only a few minor glitches.
Day one started with room service breakfast. Not something we normally do, but since it is just us (no kids) and one breakfast was included in the hotel package, we got the day off to a great, late start. Figured out the subway real quick, and off to Times Square and all that around there.
Top of the Rock - I love skyscrapers and the view from them. Great day for it, a little hazy, but great weather.
St Patrick's Cathedral - growing up Catholic, walking into this church was like visiting an old friend, I had seen it on TV so many times. Absolutely beautiful. Always annoys me though, the real "touristy" people who do not take into consideration that this still is a CHURCH!!!
Macy's - actually only intended to run in and get some make-up, but ended up walking around for a while just people watching and the body painting of a male model.
Losthubby jokes about how mountain climbers have their top 3 peaks they aspire to. Now I have hit the triumverate of shopping! Marshall Fields (RIP) in Chicago (grew up there), Harrod's in London, and now Macy's in NYC.
Lots of walking and stopping at interesting little places, and ESPN Zone for Lostbaby 3.
Dinner at BXL (Thanks next2naus!) and watching soccer with the crowd there. The bucket of mussels and frites was a great call, enjoyed with glasses of the house beer.
Spamalot - I have always loved Monty Python, and whoever said the seats were small - that was an understatement! I felt like I should have asked for bulkhead seating. But the play was great, tons of laughs. Bought tickets for Phantom Monday night on the way back to the hotel.
Sunday - woke up with a major sore throat (thought it was just dry) Subway, missed a stop and a connection and we ended way far from where we wanted to be, but had a nice little walk for a while till we figured things out.
Got to Central Park, walked around tons enjoying everything it has to offer, and also enjoyed a walk along Central Park West, paying homage to John Lennon as well.
Visited the Natural History Museum a bit. But was feelling a bit under the weather still, so back to hotel by 6ish, dinner at the hotel, running a fever by now, Ny Quil at 9 and asleep by 9:15.
Monday - feeling much better after 12 hours of sleep. Set out walking for Chinatown. Stopped at J&R for a bit,(hubby's request) mecca for all things geeky. On to Chinatown, spent quite a bit of time there, with lunch at Mr. Tangs. The shrimp w/ walnut sauce was great as mentioned (Thanks HookemHorns03!) I love walking around places like Chinatown. Picked up a few things for the kids. Just enjoyed sights, sounds, and smells of some great food.
Back to the hotel, stopped at St. Paul's Chapel right next to the hotel. Walking through the churchyard, I am amazed that the headstones are 200+ years old. And sad that too many of them are children, but that was so common then. Had to get packed for an early Tuesday flight and a short nap, then out for Phantom of the Opera. Excellent! Such a different crowd than Spamalot. Not tons of time, so got a quick sandwich and cheesecake at Juniors (on a recommendation from someone in line at Phantom) Sandwich was OK, cheesecake was pretty good, waitress was a gem. I really wanted to try one of the other recs from you all, but I was not up to a huge meal, and we were short on time.
It was such a great time, I have convinced Losthubby that this should be a yearly weekend vacation for us. There is still much we have not done. And we have a line on some Mets tickets whenever we want to come and they are in town. I guess I could be a Mets fan for a day, since the price is right.
The one things that did puzzle me was the subway. Twice while we were there we got on and as the doors started to close the conductor announced that it was an express going wherever and passing whatever stop we wanted. Thinking we hopped on the wrong train, we hurry off, only to be joined by about 80% of the other riders running off as well. I can see us making a mistake, but that many others? Is that a common thing, the train suddenly becomes an express? We have ridden subways in Wash DC, London, and Athens, and trains/L in Chicago, so we are not newbies to subway riding. Never saw this before.
Anyway - thanks to all who gave us suggestions. We had great weather, and a great time. I am saving all suggestions for the next trip. Hopefully this summer. Thanks again!
