NYC ground trans from airport?

Anybody got any tips to get a cheaper ride from Laguardia into Manhattan than a $40 cab ride? I'll be going to right at the top of the theater district (8th and 55th or so). I've seen the M60 bus, but this will be my first trip to NYC and I'm getting in fairly late and just not comfortable with the whole public transportation option as I first get into town (hell, I'm a Texan..why don't y'all all have cars!?!

) so not sure I want to chance a bus on the ride into town. Any experience or suggestions for a shuttle service or the like? If I have to, I'll just take a cab if the timing/money combo doesn't really look like it'll work out, but if anyone's got a suggestion to save some cash, please post! I'd rather it not take me an hour or 2 to get into the city if it'll just save me a couple of bucks, but if you've got some tips, lemme hear 'em! Thanks.

Uh yeah, you're going to want to go ahead and take that cab. There are perfectly good trains from Newark and JFK, but from LGA, you're cabbing it for sure.

Mass transit is going to be a bit cheaper but you are going to give up a ton of time and conveinence in the process, esp if you have luggage. If a $40 cab ride is of concern you probably souldn't be going.

Forget a cab - you should be able to take a towncare from LGA to NYC for about that amount. Better than a stinky cab.

Midtown, you never had to live on a budget here did you?

I used to do the airport shuttle service...it worked out great if you had easy subway access to grand central. That being said, if your'e going to 55th and 8th, that cab ride from Grand Central will cost you 10-15$ depending on traffic, so you're probably only saving 10 bucks for an additional hour or more of inconvenience. But hey, you can now buy another beer.

I wouldn't fool with taking public transport from LGA or JFK unless you absolutely have to. It's just easier to take cabs and this is really important if you have luggage and you aren't familar with the city. Newark has a decent rail that I use on occasion since it doesn't take too much longer than the cabs to get into the city. That gets you into Penn station.

But LGA is a no brainer. Cab it.

Take the town car.

I think from JFK a cab ride is something like $45. I found a town car for $55.

Talk about a no brainer.
