NYC Eats

I'm going to NYC for my honeymoon the week of June 18 and I'd like some recs on good restaurants. I don't want to eat at one chain restaurant the entire time I'm there if I can help it. My hotel is on 32nd street between Madison and 5th Avenue.

If you guys have some recommendations... I'm looking for some genuine NYC pizza, delis, italian, steaks... anything, really. Just good stuff. I know I'll have to be prepared to spend some $$ on NYC dinners, but if you guys know of any good lunch or breakfast places that won't break me that would be great.

Thanks!

Try this board. People are very helpful and they know Manhatten Food. The Manhatten Chowhound

Just got back from NYC this weekend, ate at Balthazar, a French Bistro. Pretty Tasty.

Steakhouse begins and ends with Peter Luger's. Its pricey, its crowded, but to me its top notch. There are others, but coming from Texas, I don't think there are a ton of steakhouse that beat Texas joints, so I would stay away from spending $200 a pop at a steakhouse and focus on some of the other top restaurants.

Avoid Little Italy for Italian food, if you want to spend, try to go early to Lupa or Babbo, both tops. Supper in the E. Village is a good spot, food is pretty good, no reservations, all cash but not too pricey, great atmosphere. There are so many options here, its hard to list without narrowing what you are looking for.

Japanese, there are tons of great sushi/japanese restaurants if you are into that: Soto just recently opened, and is great. Try Bond St. recently reopened after a fire, Cube 63 for sushi only (its BYOB), Morimoto (actually started in Philly) or the original Nobu (still better than all the later outposts IMO).

As for big time dinners, you can't go wrong with Gramercy Tavern, Gotham Bar & Grill or Veritas. If you want to step it up, and get even fancier and experience tremendous, classy service do Daniel or Jean Georges.

Since somebody remarked that this is a dead horse topic, PM me if you want any more info, recs and tell me exactly what you are looking for, and I will try to point you in the right direction. You shouldn't have to be called out for asking for recs for your honeymoon.

Have fun, its hard to go wrong when dining here, but there are definitely some places that are leagues above others in this city, too many restaurants built on hype and scene.

And while it sucks to do, if you really want to get a reservation somewhere and you can't get it this late in the game, find a reservation broker, and they might be able to get you into that restaurant

It's also a chain.

As to lighting a candle instead of cursing the darkness, a few from my hood:

Westville - 10th near bleecker, best burger in the city. Mmmm, corn, beets, other good farm fresh veggies.

August on Bleecker around Charles, not really classificable, just great stuff.

Mary's Fish Camp on Charles, lobster rolls ************.

Alfama on Hudson @ Perry, great people, will make you love portugese food, and appreciate portugese wine.

And finally a lot of people hate on Johns on Bleecker, but that's just because it is so overhyped. It really is excellent, great pizza, great crust.

Thanks, guys. On another thread someone recommended One If By Land, Two If By Sea. Anyone else been there?

How far in advance should I make a reservation at the nicer places? I'm trying to keep an open schedule, but if it's tough to get in nicer places without a reservation maybe I should schedule a few dinners...

Stick with advice from someone who lives there. Anyone can pick restaurants based off of the Food Network.

STOP CALLING IT GROUND ZERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT IS NOT GROUND ZERO

it is the World Trade Center and construction is underway for its redevelopment. I have always lived within 3-4 blocks of the WTC adn i can assure that people in my hood and the rest of NYC do not call it ground zero.

Unfortunately, Bourdain's got nothing to do with Les Halles and it's mediocre at best...ate there frequently at the one downtown until I moved outta downtown. If you're going for steak, you need to hit Luger's, and if you're going for French Bistro, then there are too many other places to hit.

Sushi - Morimoto, Bond St., Blue Ribbon (unless it's a school night prepare for a wait), I'm sure other's disagree, but I dig the 7 course omakase (chef's choice) @ Sushi Samba...I hate the fact that it's a scene, but they always do pretty cool stuff there and it's not outrageous.
Steak - Peter Luger's Brooklyn
Casual but good - Jane, Mermaid Inn, Mary's Fish camp
Pizza - Lombardi's, Arturo's (not my fave, but better than anything in texas)
Chinese - still a huge fan of Joe's Shanghai
Brunch - Jane, Balthazar (I'm not a huge fan, but the wife'll love it)

****, you're right. Westville is a chain now. And it's still the best burger in the city. The meat, the bun, the cheese (old GM on the drag or Murder Burger in Davis style), and fresh veggies. Give it a shot.

As to One if by Land. . . ., incredibly dissappointing. Bordering on suckage. No one in the place, hostess, bar staff, waiters (especially idiotic), busboys, other customers, ******* nobody knew what they were doing. Just awful.

Oh, and since I was focussed on my hood I forgot Momofuko on what 3rd & 13th? That's my favorite place in the city right now, though it's getting it's share of hype. Show up at 6 on th e dot, no resi, sit at the bar and eat a ton of cool weird asian ****.

Evil I think yours is the noodle bar. I should have said Momofuko Ssam bar. That's the one I have been to. Much more varied, upscale, wacked out ****.
