NY Times article on McFarland

"When Texas went to sleep, Oklahoma woke up." That pretty much sums it up right there. I guess in order to get a recruit that is on the fence, yoiu must pester the hell of the family until they say yes!

yeah, it seemed like it would get ugly. he committed there so some true of false things are coming out.
in history many things get forgotten or go the background and a fraction of the truth remains. almost all of OUs titles have cheating involved but no one says that. controversial calls and missed step hear or there, like our dropped pick vs TT will long be forgotten. All that people will remember is the final win and loss. There was an article on this board a few days ago that stated JK told the UT coaching staff that other schools were offering him "other things."
With all the $ out there, we clearly know someone is getting money, if not JM. NCAA needs to find a better way to monitor extra benefits.
so if thats where JM wants to go, go. Hope he has the same result there that AD did when he chose that place.

This kid sounds like he couldn't find the toilet so he **** in the sink. His mom loved OU's coaches persistence, but almost canceled the trip here because UT coaches were bugging her too much?

I find it very funny how all schools other that OU are painted as "Godless naked heathens." All schools do ****** up **** I'm sure, but for **** sakes OU was just put on probation recently.

This **** just doesn't sound right. I'm not buying into the cheating BS, but I think OU intentionally went after the "All the other schools hate Jeebus" angle. If he and his Mom chose OU because they think that is just a better class of people up north, I feel for them.

Texas came off looking like the bad guy, but it seems to me that there is more to the story - just too many holes in that article (some of which were pointed out above).

Well this is not totally unheard of........ A big time recruit being sought by both Texas and OU, picks OU and then goes negative on our staff and universsity. .(Bomar, Peterson, etc)
"Mom" sounds a like an angry, bitter person. It is probably better she not be around UT's football player families. The hell
with them. Let's move on.

Let me get this straight:
Mack never made an in-home?
McWhorter wouldn't let JM talk to Brown?
We didn't involve Giles until the end?

Sounds kind of arrogant to me.

I like how Stoops convinced him that he would have no problem getting a job in Texas with an OU degree. You probably won't have as hard of a time getting a job in Texas with an OU degree if you didn't agree to write a smear piece for the national media.

This exclusive access is extremely fishy when the writer is from Oklahoma. Oh, and here is Thayer Evans blog on the NYTimes website. He must be the resident OU Blogger....

OU Blogs - NY Times

spring branch put this out just as I was constructing a thread on this subject (the Oklahoma ties of the blogger/writer) so I'll put it here... It's not only this particular instance, but questioning everything we are reading these days. In reply to:

How can an eighteen year old, who has not played a single down at this level, state that he has a BETTER chance of making the NFL if he goes to OU. No one can say OU is better than UT in that regards or vice versa. Certainly not a high school senior. That is some BS he was fed by the OU staff and he swallowed hook, line, and sinker.
And if he believes it, why give a quote that he knows is a smack at the UT staff? Just once I'd like to hear a recruit say "I'm going to school A because I like it better, but I appreciate the opportunity school B extended to me"
Sheesh!

Holy ****!

The NY Times had a "freelance writer" named Thayer Evans who writes only about the Sooners writing a recruiting piece about a Sooner recruit?

Is this the same douchbag who wrote the Darrel Scott stories for the NY Times last year?

McFarland's decision to sign with OU is the least surprising story of the recruiting season. It's been all but a done deal for weeks, if not months.

This is not to say he doesn't have talent. He does. If he wants to take that talent north of the Red River, he'll have to live with that decision. Texas could have used him, but Texas will be just fine at defensive tackle. Two very good ones are already committed here, and I, for one, would rather talk about the players that want to be at Texas.

McFarland, and his family, if you believe the New York paper's story, found it necessary to bad mouth Texas while announcing the decision. If they did say what they're alleged to, that shows a serious lack of restraint, class, or whatever else you want to call it. If it is true, I wouldn't want any of them around the UT team, and would be inclined to think blow-u fits McFarland just right.

Perhaps I'm simplifying this, but it seems to me that a player can just be happy in announcing his choice of college, without feeling the need to run down another school. Maybe that makes me "old school". This isn't sour grapes...UT will be just fine with or without McFarland...but the story in the paper just doesn't pass the smell test, true or not.

man, that is a really ****** up story. that mom is making no sense at all.

as many people who have seen mcfarland play this year, it's just not that big of a deal. let's move on.

I like the nytimes...I hate that article and the douche blogger who wrote it though.

Alamo I say your perspective on the times is about the equal to our blogger has on Texas.
