NY Cops Revolt

You think this is acceptable?

You respect the office not the occupant. I guess soldiers should do this too.

Don't shoot the messenger. I didn't pass judgement on their actions one way or another.

You make a good point about the military. It they defended the country based on Obama's support for them, we'd be in trouble.

Maybe they are avoiding confrontation since the Mayor does not support them doing their job?

No I don't think it's acceptable.

But, I also think that de Blasio did do alot to ratchet up tensions and did contribute to the atmosphere that resulted in the killings of the two policemen. Now he's poked the elephant one too many times and made it mad. I don't know how he's going to get it to go back in its cage.

I understand their frustration with the Mayor, but half-assing their jobs and putting the public in danger isn't the right approach.

To be fair its mostly traffic tickets and misdemeanors. Hitting the city in the pocketbook. Well maybe some drug arrests have dropped too. As long as they dont ignore violent crime.

Paso,

It is not acceptable. Any sandbagging should be punished accordingly. No one here is arguing otherwise.

The point of the OP is the loss of confidence in one of the world's most respected law enforcement institutions in its leader. Easy Company also whined like little girls to get rid of Captain Sobel. They were punished accordingly, but their revolt also led to Dick Winters taking command. And the rest is history.

Was Sobel unfairly treated? Maybe yes, maybe no. Was he incompetent and a danger to his company? Who knows (imho, I think the stories of his incompetence are overblown and he was probably completely capable of commanding his company). But one thing that's indisputable is that those troopers did not want him leading them when their lives were on the line.

I'm not sure I follow your analogy, texas_ex. Blasio is a politician with limited direct strategic and tactical decision making authority over the NYPD. In your analogy he'd be the equivalent to Sec of Defense. Was Easy Company not going to do their job because they didn't like the Secretary?

In this case, the NYPD is bullying the politician. Some may think that's perfectly acceptable but by doing so they are reinforcing some of the stereotypes that the liberals have of police.

Husker,

It was just a general analogy illustrating loss of confidence in management from subordinates.

Howerver it occurs, fair or not, it renders management useless.

I think this could backfire on the NYPD. De Blassio isn't a friend to the police. He's an ideological wingnut who's so far Left that he makes Nancy Pelosi look like Ted Nugent. He ran on a platform of reining them in and likely buys into the Sharpton view of the police. Is that view severely ****** up, and has he said things supportive of that view? Yes, and that's why the police are understandably frustrated with him. I also think most sensible New Yorkers sympathize with them after the two officers were killed.

However, half assing your job isn't an option for most people just because they're pissed off at the boss, and I think many who sympathized with them will draw the line here. And what if the mayor fights back by shitcanning three officers not doing their jobs like Reagan shitcanned the air traffic controllers who weren't doing they're jobs? What if an innocent person gets killed because a cop was scratching his *** in protest instead of doing the job taxpayers are paying him to do?

What do you expect from the most liberal democrat ever to be mayor of NYC? He asked for it and now he's paying for it.

Y'all are all wrong: due to the outstanding leadership of the Mayor there is actually a huge decrease in lawbreaking. Truly no one is speeding nor committing petty crimes.

He is accomplishing his goals in the right way.

The less that cops bug people for petty little everyday stuff (the kind of stuff like selling cigarettes on a street corner, failing to use a turn signal, etc), the better. Police forces are used as a fundraising mechanism for the local government far too often, and I applaud the NYC cops for overlooking the petty infractions of excessively restrictive bureaucratic edicts. I hope they spend their time assisting with investigation and prevention of more serious and violent crimes instead.
