NW Austin Apartments

I just found out I need to move to Austin in about a week and need an apartment asap. Anyone have any good recommendation of apartments in NW Austin? I’m looking preferably off N Mopac or 183 but open to suggestions.

I’m looking for something somewhat affordable, but one of my main priorities is safety. Just need a 1 bedroom too.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look into those apartments.

Anyone have anything good to say at Gables at Great Hills?

www.aptratings.com I use this when I'm shopping around; after you sort through the ******** reviews you can get an idea of other people's experiences.

The Gables are expensive. Riata is also expensive (though not as much) because of all the amenities they provide. I live off 620 in between 2222 and Anderson Mill, and there are a lot of newer apartment complexes out here. It's quiet and close to Lake Travis; you might like it if you don't mind a bit of a drive.

Try the Somerset apartments just south of Far West and MoPac. Gated, attached garages - nice. My mom lives there, and loves it. Several UT players have lived there- don't know if any are there now.

The Far West area is the best bang for your buck apartment area you'll find in Austin. It is just south of the 183/Mopac intersection. Because of its proximity to both freeways, you can get just about anywhere in 10 minutes. It is a very safe neighborhood. You see students, young married couples, and families walking around all the time. It is also close to te jewish community center, so there is always pedestrian to and from the center. There is retail, restaurants, and the best HEB in town all within walking distance. I do advise, some of the complexes seem nicer than others so I would recommend you visit them...

Thank you all for your help!

I actually use to live close to Far West when I was in college. I like the area, but just not thrilled with the apartments in the area.

Since I have to commute towards 290 E (around Cameron Rd) I may extend my seaching area.

I have found decent places near the Arboretum and also near Spicewood Springs and also 620. My only concern is on how bad 183 S is in the morning. I've never really been on 183 during rush hour.

Any more suggestions are welcomed since I'm still up in the air

Here's a link to The Somerset. I live just north of that, and drive 183 to Cameron Rd. once a week. Traffic is not bad, especiallly if you stay in the left lane to avoid the traffic trying to get on IH35. You miss all the 183 traffic that's going onto MoPac.

The Link

The link says they are for sale, but they are still renting them and haven't made the decision on whether to sell them or rent, and I think it's rent for the time being.

Thank you all for all the suggestions.

I did check into Somerset and love it. It is a bit too pricey for me right now; however, I'm keeping it in mind. I actually use to live really close to there and love the area. The price is not bad I think though for what you get.

I think from your suggestions and common sense, I may stay close in and stop searching around 620.

Thanks!

I work nights so I always drive opposite of the rush hour traffic, but I see southbound 183 every morning and it is always backed up to Anderson Mill by 7:15 every morning. It does break up around Braker/Great Hills area though if you leave early enough.

So thank you all for your input. I took everything to heart and finally got an apartment in an area I think will be pretty good for me.

Thank you!

I ended up choosing a place on 360 for a few reasons. I love the view and the area in general. It is such a pretty drive and I’m still close enough in that I’m close to grocery stores, restaurants, etc.

I looked at a lot of places, so here is some feedback from my experience incase someone else needs the info:

Somerset Condos: I really liked these. Right now, they are renting these out instead of leasing due to the condo market not being so great. I’d guess they probably will be renting these out for awhile. The prices vary, of course, but there are different upgrades and such that it is best to call. The one I was looking at moving into was a one bedroom with hardwood floors on the second floor with a great view. I think it was on special for $1050/month. Compared to some of the other places I looked into, the price seemed pretty good for the quality. Also, good location since you are pretty close to an HEB and such.

Post Park Mesa: These are one of my favorite apartments in Austin due to the actual area and scenery (I mean like trees and such

). The actual units are nice; however, the upgraded units are great. I love 2222 area in general, but these are close enough to an HEB and Randalls, that it is the best of both worlds. It seemed actually better to rent a two bedroom here though than a one. The pools are great too and office staff is friendly.

Gables Great Hills: These are in a quiet, nice area with lots of shady and trees. Everyone seems pretty friendly; however, the units are pretty old and show the wear. I’ve lived at a Gables, so the management quality is a plus and why I considered moving to another Gables property. Good specials too.

Gables Grandview: These were pretty sweet and the views are great as well. Pretty pricey though.

Riverlodge: These are really nice and at a pretty decent price for the quality and location. These are off 2222, so the area and drive is beautiful. For me, downside was the drive, so why I passed. But pretty good place if anyone is interested in this area.

So there you have it. I did look at more places including downtown and Far West area. For me, the price of downtown is not worth it since I will be traveling so much. Some great places though for someone who would benefit from living in middle of all that action. The new Gables off 5th street looks pretty sweet.

Maybe this thread will help someone else out as much as it did me. Also, to anyone looking to rent an apartment that you think is out of your price range, go by first. Some of the specials I came across were great for a 12 month lease.

It is good to be back in Austin finally.
