Nutrition: protein powder vs. yogurt

I buy both soy protein powder and plain yogurt to add to my daughters’ and my meals (i.e. a scoop in muffins, pancake mix, homemade breads) to add a little nutritional value to their foods that would otherwise be simply high in carbs. Plain yogurt has the advantage when I cut their pre-sweetened flavored yogurt, then they can substitute that and fresh fruit for syrup on their pancakes & waffles. It also makes a nice fruit smoothy, a little more palatable and tart than just a scoop of protein powder. The advantage of soy protein powder is that it packs a little more protein ounce for ounce than does the yogurt.

Is there anything that I’m not considering that would make one more beneficial over the other? Understand this is not a “diet” question per say; I understand the importance of giving kids a balanced diet of carbs, protein, fresh fruits and veggies, and I’m not looking to cut anything away from their diet, only supplement with a little protein in foods they normal get none in. I only try and lower processed sugar intakes from their diets (cut fruit juice with water, half splenda in baking recipes, etc.), so it’s not an issue of cutting or eliminating calories.

One last question on the soy protein powder: is there difference in bands/ types? I usually buy the Gen-Soy brand because of its price and availability.

I'm not sure that all that is necessary, but if you were going to just do a couple of things

Teach them moderation--Eat good meals, healthy snacks, avoid lots of soda and don't let them get a taste for the things that will really hurt them later on-- pure junk foor like chips and twinkies

And buy them Mootopia milk at HEB-- low carbs, high protein and tastes good

The benefit I could see with yogurt (over the protein powder) is if you use yogurt with active cultures it can help keep things happy in their digestive tract.

Due to some nasty stomach bugs, intestinal health has been a real issue the last few weeks around my house, and acidophilus powder (since we couldn't eat yogurt) has really helped.
