Nov. open practice

As of right now, due to the FEC having many events scheduled during Oct that conflict with practice dates on weekends, it seems that the first open practice will be on Nov 6. Time still to be set although it has usually been in the afternoon.

That will be after the St. Eds exhibition on 10/27 and before the Stanford season opener on 11/11 so we should have some things to look for during the practice and maybe ask the coaches about.

The single thing I most want to read in Babhorn's recaps of the exhibition, and open practice, is that everyone (other than McCoy who we know is out) is healthy and playing. I know injuries happen but we've had more than our fair share in recent times; hopefully everyone will be 100% and ready to play when the season starts. Can't wait to see all of the newcomers, and Cokie back in action!

Open practice coming in a little over a week. Looking forward to seeing everyone on the floor, prepping for Stanford. Saw some good things from everyone that played against St. Eds and hope to see AT, Chelsea, and Tiff on the floor on Nov 3.

Some very very quick notes from the mobile......some practice moments that looked very good. Seemed to take a little while to get going and I am still looking for consistency. But there is a lot of talent. Brady and and Chelsea did not participate in drills. I heard an unconfirmed story that we may not see Tiffany this season.

Nice practice. Got to meet all the coaches and players, catch up with some other fans. Good turnout. It was good to see quite a number of younger fans taking the time to come watch.

All players there except for Shanice participated in the opening drills. Tiff was not present, still ill. Brady and Cheslea did not join in any of the scrimmages. I hope they and Tiff will be ready to go against Stanford. Horns did some 3 on 3 and 4 on 4 drills before playing two 20 scrimmages against the guys.

Some good things in both scrimmages as well as some that will continue to need to be improved. Horns should be a better rebounding team, simply because they got more bodies. Some pretty talented ones at that. It’s easy to see the potential in Nneka, Ronisha, and Kayla. Ashley had a sweet block and a couple of nice finishes around the basket. Cokie was strong inside and Anne Marie hit a couple from around the FT line and some nice finishes inside off feeds from penetrating guards. Still had some TOs due to anticipation from the passer that didn’t pan out. Like last season, Horns pushed the tempo after every made shot and rebound. Some nice passes from everyone, especially from Cassie. No question that the Horns will be better balanced this season with scoring able to come from both inside and outside.

Outside shots were taken by everyone except Nneka, unless I missed that. Posts were shooting from around the FT line or just beyond. Anne Marie was the best, per my recollection. Ashleigh & Chassidy did the best from BTA. Chassidy had some nice passes when driving inside. FT shooting was not the best. That’s one area I would love to see the team average at least 70%.

Saw this combo a few times on the floor: Ashley, Cokie, Chassidy, Ashleigh & Yvonne. Wouldn’t surprise me to see those five start against Stanford. Also watched a front line of Anne Marie, Nneka & Ronisha that looked pretty good. The frosh are still thinking on defense but not so much that it causes a lot of problems but a hiccup here and there is noticeable.

I wasn’t really watching the practice critically, just enjoying watching them run up and down the court, getting ready for Stanford. They all looked in great shape. They worked well together in different combinations. Not necessary smoothly, but well. Good team chemistry what I can see. One thing I did like, they make the extra pass to be get a better shot but do not overpass and end up with a worse shot looking for a better one.

Overheard Brady doing what looked like profile type of interview. She mentioned that she was undecided about her major but was considering physical therapy or sport reporting. I asked her about the PT and whether she had considered occupational therapy. She is interested in athletes recovering from injuries. Wonder what major she will end up choosing? Very nice young lady. But you can say that about all of them.

Pretty much every TV station in town had reporters there. Lots of questions for the players interviewed about Stanford. Wonder why.

I’m looking forward to seeing the interviews. Saw someone I thought looked familiar. Turned out to be Julia Morales, one of the sports anchors for YNN, pretty much the only news station I watch. Also talked to some UT students that are members of a spirit group (Texas Cheer?) that were talking to the players and coaches about how they were going to be at the games cheering. Nice to see that. That’s how more student support starts.

Also found out that the Dec. 14 game already has at least 4000 students from area schools that will be coming. That game is at 11 am as the students will spend the day on the UT campus, starting with the game.

Roger Wallace of KXAN reported last night that Tiffany Moore "is being treated for severe allergies". The words "being treated" sounded worse to me than reality, perhaps.

Sure hope they get those allergies under control soon. Tiff can't seem to get a break (so to speak) with her broken wrist last season and now this.

Get healthy soon, Tiff!

Good recap Babhorn. I noticed that Ronisha shut it down early and iced her knee. Didn’t appear to be a concern, and hopefully it will not be going forward. Nneka flashed some athleticism that makes me believe she will be a serious force before she leaves campus. I’m excited to see what these posts can do. What I expect is a pretty steep learning curve for the younger ones. Our resident Hornfans coach told me earlier this offseason the AG would be better finishing around the basket. I’m starting to buy into that. She looked pretty good yesterday. Cokie looks good, but like maybe her timing is not quite where it needs to be. That is to be expected after a long layoff like she had. It shouldn’t take much game time to get that back. I’m with you on the free throws.

AG has improved at least one facet of her offensive game every season. Looks like making bunnies unchallenged and through contact are two things she worked on. She also showed a hook shot in Europe I don't remember seeing. AG has been awesome in working to get better.
