Nothing sinks like a Deere

There's nothing like poking a little fun at the neighbors and besides, this'll be the hot conversation around here for a least a week.. so here goes:

Our new neighbors have been fixing up the place and they have really done a great job so far. There is an old pond by the main road that has filled in almost completely with sediment over the years and the old owners never did anything about it.

Personally, I wouldn't have taken any vehicle within 15 feet of that sinkhole but I guess one of the new owners decided he could do some real spring cleaning today with his nice, pretty, John Deere.

I just couldn't resist snapping a few shots of the aftermath. That tractor came out of there smelling like week old tuna fish wrapped in a dirty diaper.

?? That's not so deep. Really.

Granted, it's deep enough to get stuck & there's not much he can do with the 4x4 feature when it's that goopy... but so long as the engine is above water, no harm / no real foul other than having to get pulled out of the muck.

Oh, & if you've never been stuck then you're not really "four-by-ing".

dozer or a heavy duty wrecker will pull it out easily. You'll have to crack open the rear differential to drain all the water out and replace the fluid.

WTF was he thinking? ****, I drove into my pond when it had been bone dry for a month, and even with 4WD I barely got back out. It stays wet underneath.

In terms of being stuck, stuck, I agree this really wasn't that bad. Thanks to the internet I'm sure there are pictures like this where only the tip of the bucket is showing. Still, it was definitely a 'what were you thinking' kind of deal. That pond probably has 15 feet of silt washed in to it and I almost got my boots sucked off just walking around the bank to snap those photos.

They ended up getting it out of there with a winch and it was a pretty quick.

so whats the best way of digging out a pond like that? i have never really thought about it. I will tell you one thing though, that pond is way to big for that little tractor to make a dent in it.

Yes, an excavator or some other yellow machine with a drag bucket is what you need to clean that lake out. None of it is going to be quick and you could drain it, let it 'dry' all summer, and you're still going to be working in a lot of mud. We had a similar 'lake' on our place upriver and that's about how it went. It helps if you install a drain and lower the level from time to time to clean out the fill that accumulates.
