Noteable former players - Shane Reynolds?

They had a scroll going during the game on noteable former players and listed the usual Clemens and Swindell. But why would they list Shane Reynolds? He was on the '89 team, but he never played in Omaha. Given his hatred for the Horns, I would much rather them list Dennis Cook or Billy Bates or Brooks Kieshnick or Calvin Murray or Huston Street or any of several others. That was just epic fail by ESPN.

They did list Pinky Higgins and Tex Hughson...old school baby!

What has Shane said about our program? I have to say I was a huge fan of the team in 1989 and I don't remember him very well.

Burt Hooten? Moreland, Ruffin, Owen, Schiraldi, etc.

Guess I need to brush up on my Texas baseball history, but I've never heard of Pinky Higgins.

Higgins is old old school. He played for Coach Disch.

1929 and 1930 All Southwest Conference and the 1930 Team Captain. They won the Conference both years but this was 17 years before there was a College World Series.

14 year Major Leaguer and 3 time All-star and appeared in the 1940 and 1946 World Series

First off, I actually liked Shane as a player and teammate. You could tell he was very mature for his age and he was already married when he joined the team. And it was obvious he had a ton of talent. He kind of got a bad rap about choking in big games and I'm not sure if maybe Gus stoked the fire by calling him on that. The 10 run lead loss at A&M was a big one. Anyway, he and Gus got crossways with each other and decided to go separate ways after the regular season was over. Whether this cost us the championship in '89 is up for debate. But it couldn't have hurt to have another major league arm in the pen.

As to what he has said about us, I think it mainly revolves around Gus' overuse of pitchers. He seems pretty bitter about his UT days and I hate that for him because he played well IMO. Wearing #21 carried big expectations in those days. I could see where it would be too much for some players to handle.

I know that he has had nothing kind to say about Coach Gus.

As a fan, I always liked Shane. Until he went to the Astros ...

Last time I checked Coach Gus himself did not leave UT in the best of terms. It would be great if Augie could reach out to Shane Reynolds as it would be good to have him involved with the program from time to time. Back in those days Coach seemed to have a doghouse that was pretty hard to escape once you were in there. I think this hurt us in Omaha a couple times and it actually caused some of the overuse problems IMHO.

Let's put it this way. Shane's mom was wearing an LSU cap at the 89 CWS. (We drummed the tigers that year) Shane was a big cry baby ***** and doesn't belong up there with those other names. BTW, Bates won a world series (don't remember with who) and contributed to the win.

Can not forget about this guy;

..majored in physical education at University of Texas...set school record of 10 rbi in game, March 5, 1978 vs. Arkansas...captain and All-Conference shortstop in senior year, leading Longhorns to Southwest Conference championship and fourth place in College World Series..

Always liked Gardenhire. JC, IIRC. A good but not great player at UT.

The word I would use to describe Shane Reynolds, in what moments I saw of him, is "prickly." At a minimum, not comfortable around the media. Maybe he was a better teammate. But I recall him frequently being what I thought was critical of teammates, when maybe he thought he was being honest. An individual on a team, rather than part of the team. JMO.
