Not trying to open old wounds, but Russel Shepard,

Squall

wish he had gone to Texas.

seems like a nice kid, and of course he's a hell of a leader (based off the fact he's been recruiting so much).

Still, can't fault Texas if it was an either/or with Shepard and Gilbert, but damn, both would have been fantastic.

and have at least three to four years of the old.. Applewhite - Chris Simms debate and rankor that split the fan base.

Yeah.. no.

It would have been nothing like AppleWhite-Simms, because Applewhite was already a starter, and a successful one at that.

It would have been more like McCoy-Snead, where both were inexperienced, or like Vince-Mock.

If both had come here, one of them would have eventually gotten the starting spot (or seen the writing on the wall) and the other probably transfers. And if it was Gilbert that won the starting job, everytime he gets sacked, someone here would say "Shepard would have escaped and ran for a TD".

If it would be like McCoy-Snead, then one would end up transferring anyway, so what's the difference? Two national talents like that don't want to ride the pine for 3-4 yrs. That being said, I'm ecstatic with the QB we have coming in. I wouldn't take anyone over him.

wish we could have got both, but i understand the situation. i really like RS--and hate to see good kids go to lsu

I would have loved to have him, and you are right that he seems like a nice kid. That being said...I'd always rather take the QB who is a great passer and an ABLE scrambler. I think people get too enamored with a "running" QB. To me it doesnt matter how much a pure runner a QB is...as long as he can be effective in scrambling when he needs to...and have the ability to keep his head up and find open receivers while scrambling.

There was some goon on 1560am yesterday going off on how great LSU's class was and talking about Shep. being the top QB in the nation. It was basically the kind of call that makes you want to call in the station and correct him.

As Randy Rodgers said yesterday, Texas had to choose one because they weren't both going to go to the same school.

I'm very happy with Garrett and the rest of this class.

What cracked me up was the ESPN guys comparing Shepard to Vince. Come on, the guy completed 55% of his passes his Sr. year, & ran for more yards than he passed for (about 1,900 to 1,700).

Vince was an offensive machine at Madison. He threw for about 4,000+ yards his Sr. year, with only 3 ints. There is absolutely no comparison, and I agree with those who say Miles will switch Shepard to WR by his sophomore year.

What has Shepard done?

When VY was being recruited I remember watching his team in the playoffs and him kicking *** in the HS all-star games. Perhaps I am not following things very closely but I have not seen anything from Shepard.

Gilbert on the other hand won back to back 4a state titles, was the offensive player of the year in the entire country, played a bunch in the all-star games, played his semifinal game at DKR in front of a large crowd, is a local kid.....what am I missing. Seems like he is the guy that you would not want to miss on.
