After taking on the number 1 team in the nation this past Tuesday and falling hard, the Longhorns take on a struggling North Texas team. The Mean Green are 0-2 this season, falling to Stephen F Austin 81-51 and to George Washington 84-82.The Horns will bring a 1-1 record into the game with a win over UT-San Antonio (71-60) and a loss to UConn (58-83) this past Tuesday.
The Mean Green are led by Brittney James (#30, 5-8 Sr. G) with 18.5 ppg. Texas transfer Niqky Hughes (#23, 6-0 Jr. G) is the second leading scorer at 14.5 ppg. They are joined by Jasmine Godbolt (#24, 6-0 Fr. F) at 10 ppg as the only Mean Green players averaging in double figures. James, Hughes, Tamara Torru (@34, 5-10 Soph. G) and Britteny Hudson (#5, 5-7 Soph. G) have started both games for North Texas. Torrian Timms (#42, 6-0 Sr. P) and Godbolt have split starts at the other position with Timms getting the start in the last game.
The Mean Green are averaging 66.5 ppg, two more than Texas but are giving up 82.5 ppg. Godbolt leads the team with 8.5 rpg. Timms’ two blocks lead the team. With only Chynna Burwell (#4, 6-4 Jr. P-JC transfer) as the only player over 6 feet, they are not a tall team. Burwell is averaging 13.5 mpg and 5 rpg, third on the team. To date, the Mean Green are shooting poorly, hitting 36.8% from the field, 25% from BTA, and 56.9% from the FT line. They are getting outrebounded by 8.5 rpg. James and Hughes are the primary threats from BTA as they are only two players to have hit from BTA. James is 3-6 (50%) while Hughes is 3-8 (37.5%). The leading FT shooters for North Texas are James (8-12, 66.7%), Hughes (6-11, 54.5%), Godbolt (8-13, 61.5%) and Raquel Cuffie (#11, 5-10 Fr. G; 8-12, 66.7%).
Texas is led in scoring by Kat (14.0 ppg) and Brit (12.5 ppg). They are the only two Longhorns in double figures. Like last year, Kat also leads the team in rebounding at 7.0 rpg. Ashley is second in clearing the boards at 5.5 rpg in an average of 16 mpg. Kat is all over the stats. In addition to leading in scoring and rebounding, she is second in assists with five (Ashleigh is first with 6), tied with Lauren in FT % at 100 % (4-4 to Lauren’s 2-2), and has taken and made the most FGs (11-22). Her 50% is third behind Brit (9-15, 60%) and Ashley (4-7, 57.1%) and she is tops in defensive rebs with an average of 5.5 pg. Our perimeter players are 7-29 from BTA (24.1%), Earnie’s 1-5 makes the team 8-34 from BTA for 23.5%. The offensive woes are evident in the team’s 47-127 for 37%. FT is an average 65.9%. They are getting to the line an average of 20.5 times a game. The Horns are averaging 64.5 ppg while allowing 71.5 ppg.
Both teams have been second half teams offensively so far this season. The Mean Green are averaging 29 pts in the first half and 37.5 pts in the second half. Texas averages 27.5 pts in the first 20 minutes and 37 pts in the second 20 minutes. I guess one may not miss too many offensive fireworks in the first half.
Projected starters (assuming Brit is not still in the doghouse)

Ashleigh Hudson

Horns had 4384 show up for the first home game of the season. North Texas played before 842 in their home opener. Can’t see too many Mean Green fans making the trip down to Austin.
KVET 1300 AM will carry the radio broadcast. No tv for this one. You are just going to have to come to the game. After all, what else is there to do in Austin on a Friday night?
