Non-judged events medal count

That is pretty interesting. Did not open the link but I'd like to see a breakdown of those sports that are judged and not judged in which both countries have received a medal.

Everyone knew this would happen in BJ - it was readily apparent.

It looks like the US will squak out total medals and China will dominate golds. Consider this however:

China spent many billion USD of public funds to train their athletes starting 12 years ago when they won the olympics for Beijing.

They took thousands upon thousands of young children away from their families to 24/7 boot camps of misery to get their medals. No expense was spared (except on the athlete's non athletic lives) and they concentrted on sports where the US doesn't do well and can be affected by questionable means (women's weightlifiting anyone?)

The US will NEVER win the golds count again vs China unless China drastically reduces funding and the US drastically increases funding for events that we don't currently have a large cash spend on.

Consider - sports where we spend money or have a pro league (basketball, swimming, gymnastics, beach volleyball, track) we dominated or did very well- even in the case of incredibly prejudicial judging. We will do well in track and field although not as good as usual.

The US uses no public funds (no government funding) to train it's Olympians. The Chinese spent billions. (Billions)

Based on that we are doing very very well to win the medal count (with only 1/4 of the people)

It's no big deal we are doing great.

I dig you Kong Horn, I really do. You're there, for God's sake. I am envious of you on more than one level. I can't speak to your objectivity, but please be accurate.

IIRC, China didn't know it would host these summer games until July 2001. They have been training their athletes beyond seven or even twelve years.

China has never been more competitive in the summer olympics. They only recently started coming let alone hosting. Indians I know are calling home and stirring a dream to host the summer games. And why not? A billion people and you got what, Cricket? That's not lazy, but neither is it properly motivated for a bunch of reasons.

I'm pissed as hell at these olympic judged events - but everyone wants to ***** about the gymnastics. I do too. But I also understand what countries are guilty of the stupid freaking scores. Australia? Gimme a break. But it ain't chinese judges screwing this up.

I really hate the way boxing is now scored by judges. But US boxing has never fielded a team as bad as this one EVER.

Good for China for showing up ready to compete. In my lifetime, I never would have thought they would have hosted such a spectacular olympic games. But not a the cost of child athletic slave trade.

Forgive the rant. In closing, there is no shortage of US superstars in these summer games. And many Longhorns competing for various flags - and winning Gold. I love the games and I love the hippie spirit of the games. And I want to work in Hong Kong next summer.

I won't defend the women's gymnastics scores here, but I will say a lot of the diving I've seen from the Chinese, regardless of being "judged" or "scored" it is definitely better than everyone else dives.

HHK nailed it. When a government decides to spend that kind of money with a billion people to choose from, they are going to do well. The USA does not pay to train its athletes. If we did, we would just roll everyone like our softball team does.

I didn't want to think like this, but they just showed a news story where the Chinese are basically showing off these huge state run programs that are modeled after the Soviet youth programs. The story said over 200,000 children are in training. Also talked about the emphasis on lesser known sports that award lots of medals. Its a fine model, but its still hard to beat the competition that kids face here.

Assuming a UT student population of 50,000, which is .00003761 the population of China, I'd say that UT's medals count is kicking China's ***!!!!!
