perhaps the occupy wall street crowd to focus on all the rich folk in dc who live better than anyone else in the country.

Federal employees whose compensation averages more than $126,000 and the nation’s greatest concentration of lawyers helped Washington edge out San Jose as the wealthiest U.S. metropolitan area, government data show.

The U.S. capital has swapped top spots with Silicon Valley, according to recent Census Bureau figures, with the typical household in the Washington metro area earning $84,523 last year. The national median income for 2010 was $50,046.

The figures demonstrate how the nation’s political and financial classes are prospering as the economy struggles with unemployment above 9 percent and thousands of Americans protest in the streets against income disparity, said Kevin Zeese, director of Prosperity Agenda, a Baltimore-based advocacy group trying to narrow the divide between rich and poor.

“There’s a gap that’s isolating Washington from the reality of the rest of the country,” Zeese said. “They just get more and more out of touch.”

Someone wake me up when this nightmare is over. No way the last three years can be real. No way.

There is an estimated annual cost of $259.3 billion, in current March 2010 dollars, to the federal government from civilian employee  total compensation projected for the year 2010.

I'm having trouble posting a link from my phone but this is from a quick google search. The numbers could be way off but this number is in line with what you posted.

Id say 1/5 of the debt is a pretty big chunk.... not that firing every single government employee is needed, but still, we shouldnt scoff that 1/5 isnt gonna make a difference.

I am much more concerned about the people that do not work, get section 8 housing, free food, free healthcare, free everything for their kids, etc than people who show up for work everyday.

For example, at my school we have many of the above mentioned people that do not work and live off the system. We have janitors that bust their *** working all night. The janitors are government employees (school district employees at least) that everybody likes to ***** about. Both live about the same lifestyle but only one works for it. Why not start with the people that are completely capable of doing the same job but choose not to?
