no sound on computer

I'm running Windows XP, and for some reason I can't hear any sound. I've checked to make sure the speakers are on and mute is off. Other than that I'm lost. Any ideas?

Are the speakers plugged into the appropriate port? Does Windows recognize that you have a soundcard installed (look in your Device Manager to see if there is a soundcard listed)?

most of the time the speaker line is plugged into the wrong hole on the sound card.

Have you tried all the holes. It is usually the green one that is speaker out.

Yeah, it's in the green hole. It's one of the few things I knew to check.

When I went to the sounds and audio device property window (out of control panel), it listed my default device as SB Live! Wave Device.

Yeah, it's not the program. I can't hear music, games or alerts. I've checked multiple programs and none have sound.

any chance your speakers might be dead?

plug headphones into the speaker slot (on the computer) and see if you hear anything.

Texas, that was it. My speakers show power to them, but for some reason sound isn't making it that far. When I plugged headphones in, I heard the sound. Guess I just need new speakers. Strange that they'd fail like that...

Thanks!

You may have only blown the sub - since that powers the 2 speakers, they all appear to be out.

Also, sometimes, a combination button press on the speaker (with the main cotrol, obviously) will mute the speaker system, even the control panel show not muted, speakers themselves are - make sure that also isn't the case. Check the manual if you've still got it.
