I didn't get to watch the match but I saw the replay several times, and the Hand of God (part 2) was absolute BS. Needless to say the mood in Ireland is not very good at the moment. It's been the main headline for the past 2 days, and the prime minister even mentioned the situation to Sarkozy at the EU meeting in Brussels yesterday. Ireland may have still lost in penalty kicks but at least that would have been a fair way to go out.
It was a gut wrenching noncall to be sure, but I found Keane's miss in the second half equally damning.
After watching the replays, the line judge had as good a look as anyone, while the ref was shielded somewhat.. It happens. It sucks, but it happens.
I find it interesting that FIFA allows the fifth ref to make the call on Zidane's headbutt, but not on a play like this. I wonder if it was Duff who made the handball which led to a score, who it have stood?
The worst combination to piss off is soccer fans and the Irish. The combination of most violent sports fans with a population that has "terrorists" doesn't seem like it would be the best choice to internationally screw.
