No Eyes

So we started our first game of the 2010 season without the Longhorn Band playing "The Eyes of Texas".

Does anyone know why?

I was somewhat disappointed in the 35,000 or so "fans" that did not stick around to sing at the end of the game

I agree. This is disappointing and also it is not right.
Surely, there is an official reason/excuse for it not being played.
We allow the opposing team to play its song and the LHB plays it for them if their band didn't come to Austin.
It appeared events were being controlled by the Reliant people on headsets with the screen for Rice events etc etc.

I'd say, put it in the contract for these away games that we get to play the Eyes before the game. OR JUST PLAY IT ANYWAY.

Does anyone in the LHB know why ?

umm...team gathered in the southeast corner of the field and the band played it after the game. There just weren't many people left to hear it. True to fashion, the place was emptied out barely moments after the game.

I don't think they allow us to do it any longer, but I always loved when LHB played The Eyes moments before the kickoff at the OU game. If I remember correctly, it is now played during the bands pre-game show.

Most of the fans in my section were very shocked and disappointed. It appeared to be bad planning and an oversight. Every game home or away allows the visiting team's school song. Very shocked out this occured and someone should be looking into this matter at the school.

it was disappointing. there was the sense that something was wrong - don't understand how it didn't happen. i just figured it was something else new - the announcer didn't even say "The Showband of the Southwest." Is that a thing of the past too? I really miss the marching from the 70s and early 80s (yup, AARP member here hahaha).

So here is the "official" word from a current, veteran member of LHB. "Rice announcers/MOB did not give us an opportunity to play it during pregame so there was no time for us to play. We always give the away band a chance to play their song, or we play it for them, but most bands don't do that." LHB was not happy to not be given the opportunity.
A totally editorial comment on my part: I know the Stanford band and MOB are supposed to be cool because of their satire, etc. I think they suck.

The MOB is not what it used to be. They were pitiful Saturday. I was actually embarrassed for them.

Damn those 2%'ers, when you have a 4 hour drive back home trying to beat the crowd in a runaway game is worth the 30 minutes that you would save. You drive 4-5 hours in the morning, sit through most of a 4 hour game and then have to drive another 4-5 hours home.

Call me a t-shirt fan or whatever but sometimes things have to be sacrificed.

I sure hope we don't start humping it!!!!!

That really sucks. The other school should be allowed to play its school song when visiting.
I was impressed by the Michigan band at the Rose Bowl, because they came over to the Texas fans' section and played Texas Fight prior to the game. Apparently this is a Big X tradition, and its a good one. Maybe we should adopt it, except at the OU game. To hell with them.

I think the OP is talking about prior to the game, after the National Anthem and the Rice school song. I'm guessing you don't go to a lot of away games because about half of them are rude that way to the visiting team. It's discretionary to the home school and if they don't let you do it then you don't do it. This was techincally a home game for Rice so it was up to them. As mentioned before, we go way above and beyond by letting every team have their time and especially by doing it for them if they can't.

I understand the pre-game is determined by the home team. However, LHB did play some prior to kick off. If the home team does not offer specific time, just play The Eyes anyway. At Reliant, it was 99.9% Horn Fans and there would be no interference to the sound...
