I thought the D was more because Navy was "overly-focused" on getting their plays to work instead of actual great defense by our guys. We will not win half our conference games if our guards combine for 2 steals every night. And I think a lot of that had to do with Joseph eating up minutes that should have gone to Brown.
I liked what I saw from Johnson and Hamilton, but the whole team needs to be more consistent. You just cannot go through dry spells of 4+ minutes without scoring a single point, especially in the first half when you're trying to keep things close. We're not Butler and we can't control the pace like other teams.
Generally, i like what I saw from Thompson and Joseph, although to be honest the former appeared a little slower than I expected and the latter seemed to be pressing a bit.
I know it was their first game and that it takes time to acclimate one's self to the speed of the college game. Not complaining, just an observation.
Some good early signs for sure. I thought the second-half team looked like a group that could certainly play with anyone. The first half team, not so much. I thought we were clearly better with Brown on the court - Gettis was going on and on about Lucas, but as it happened it was Brown making the plays during that run and it was Brown that really seemed to supply the energy.
When Hamilton isn't settling for threes and Johnson is shooting that midrange, this is a pretty good offensive team.
If Lucas makes one of his 3-point attempts, he's the leading scoring guard of the game. I think it's about time he got an expanded role, as we relied far too heavily on Bradley to do that stuff last year... and he only passed the test against crap teams.
