Nice article about Earl

A very good and poignant article. The strength of his character can never be questioned.
His name belongs on our field.
Thanks for posting.

If his spinal condition had been diagnosed, he probably would never have played football

"If that right lick had ever hit me, I would've permanently been in a wheelchair."

Damn. If that article doesn't move you. My first game ever was 1975 in the steady rain in the upper deck watching Earl and Akins run over Rice.

I wish he and Ricky could have a closed door meeting with the players. Players only- no coaches, no grad assistants. But alas, I know many of them have no idea what Earl and Ricky did, what they accomplished and what they overcame.

Never knew about the pain killers and rehab.

When I was still in the restaurant industry , Earl was a semi-regular at a restaurant where I worked. He was a drinker to begin with but we also knew about the pills. The quantity of the alcohol he drank did not match his intoxication & we knew something else was in play. Nobody judged him, with the beating he took playing football it really didn’t surprise any of us. My main concern was that I lost an aunt to combining opiates with alcohol & I didn’t want to see that happen to him. When I interacted with him he was probably in the darkest part of his phase , so I was pleased years later when I heard that he had conquered his addictions and was doing physical rehab and walking again. :hookem:
