Next Year and Barnes

Following up on the assessment of this years team, do you think Barnes changes his coaching style/philosophy for next year? Or does he continue with the status quo and hope someone develops into a complete PG that can run the offense? I have the impression that Barnes is pretty stubborn and he will continue on his way doing the things he always have, but, even though it was a tough year for the players, it seems to me Barnes could have learned a great deal this year if he does a self-evaluation.

That is all I have asked all season. Just a little heat on Rick. He is the most comfortable head coach in America (save for the big boys like Roy, Coach K, Boeheim, etc.) and does not truly have the skins on the wall to be that comfortable.

i think the heat does need to be turned up on him some - if we are going to recruit so many one and done types - he needs go make some changes in his coaching style - anyone who coaches knows that a season like this can happen - don't like it - but it still happens - the decline started with the inability to get anything postitve inside around the bucket and went south from there and sometimes no matter what you try when things go bad - they just go bad - however rick needs to take a long look at his offensive philosophy - he is a defensive coach and this group had no "team" defensive concept - therefore his "philosophy" looked even worse - also as a coach when you have a season of this type, one must do some serious sef-evaluation and make changes(even if minor) - if rick is not willing to do this, then maybe it is time for him to go

What disturbs me the most about Barnes is his lack of desire to win a championship. That's why you're here pal. That's what you get paid the big bucks for. Texas doesn't pay you to train college kids for the next stage in their careers. That's a byproduct of your efforts. You are here to graduate players, and win championships, or hell, how about just a conference title.

If you want to just come to work and be mediocre, go somewhere else. Lenoir Rhyne perhaps? I'm sure they'd be plenty happy with just "making the tournament" every year.

Very true overmaars. Rick complains about the attendance record then admits his priority is he wants more people to see what? His not caring about winning it all above sending the players he beats into submission to the NBA? Thanks Rick...I can burn $2 million a year in a fire just as well as you can I bet.

I am just afraid that if we do not have a really good (top 15 maybe) point guard then our offense is going to suck. We should be able to run a decent offense on top of a strong defensive unit that gives us a chance to go deep in the tournament even if don't have a top notch PG.

If he gets all 3 freshman back next year and has a similar year he might really start feeling the heat.

He should at least get a 4 seed and a Sweet 16 appearance if he gets them all back.

If he loses more than 1 of them it could be his worst team at Texas and probably can't be even considered an at large team. He would get a pass then.

Only 6 coaches get paid more than Barnes to coach NCAA basketball (Calipari, B.Donovan, B.Self, T.Matta, R.Pitino & Coach K). If that isn't enough "heat" to perform better, then we have more money than sense.

I read on Yahoo that there is a rumor that Tubby Smith is headed to Auburn ( the aggy of Alabama

)

It is obvious after the season Barnes coached this season, he will be (or is) on a very short leash and will probably be gone if he doesn't at least compete in the Big 12 next year.

In my opinion he won't be able to right the ship and Texas will be looking at replacing him. Most likely after the crummy season Avery Bradley will (and should) go pro and Cory Joseph probably will go to Nova or UConn

What would it take to get someone like Tubby Smith or Mark Few (from Gonzaga) (or any other sound "COACH") to come to Austin.

It is painfully obvious Barnes is not in the class of a Bill Self (although he thinks he is I am sure), but sadly he is not in the same class as Mark Turgeon or Scott Drew when it comes to XO's

I say get Tubby to Austin!!!!

No, but if Mack wanted to replace Greg Davis as Offensive Coordinator, Leach would make an interesting hire.

And what the hell does that have to do with wanting a better basketball coach than Barnes

I guess that makes you one of those Rick Barnes apologists. How can you be happy with the way the team tanked?

I am okay giving him one more chance, but he sure better get this team to at least the Sweet 16 next year. It is embarrassing having Baylor and aggy laughing at Texas. Please remove the Orange-Colored glasses. Half of the Big 12 (KU KST, Baylor, aggy, OKST and probably Missouri) were a better team than Texas, but outside of KU had less talent. That falls on the coach.

1. Everyone agrees that without a great point guard, the Texas offense is a suckfest because there appears to be zero plan.

2. RB has to learn to adapt to the one-and-done style (good point by a previous commentor). Fans like to say "what if?" in terms of having LaMarcus Aldridge, Kevin Durant, and Damion James on the same team. But Duke and other big-name programs have learned to deal with it. Now, Barnes must adapt, as well. Or, go for players who will need more development but might not have as many "gifts." We had plenty of gifted players on this year's team and the only present we opened was a box of ****.

If the Texas players work their butts off this Summer to Improve I think they will have a very good year next year. All the blame should not go to Barnes but the players must do their jobs also.

Very little has been said about the assistant coaches on this board. A lot of the basketball "X's and O's" stuff can be fixed with some better hires. We've replaced guys who have gone on to become head coaches at respectable D-I schools with guys who "make their own hours," according to one of them.

No offense to the best that Seminole, TX, has to offer, but there is some young coaching talent out there.

I'm not a fan of getting rid of Barnes, even if he has another piss poor year next year as I think he'd earned the slack, but if we were to consider it, it would have to be for a homerun. Something like buying Tom Izzo. Otherwise I just can't see who you can get that's realistic and a CLEAR upgrade to Barnes.

if you guys think you can get rid of Barnes just by having one more mediocre season, I think I can safely sell you some waterfront land in the middle of Arizona. Remember what happened when Penders left? It took a scandal to get him to go. As long as Rick has a winning season next year, he's back. IMO, this is a minor sport in the eyes of Deloss.

Remember Deloss fired Abe, but Deloss was told when he started working in Austin that his first job would be to fire Abe. He isn't that into firing a coach that has had the success Rick has had.
Abe was different. He made it easy to fire him, with his comments. I bet Rick hasn't offended one person in the athletic office.

Yeah, there needs to be heat next year. IMO, the heat started the minute the game ended the other night. He'll have at least a full season of heat then maybe at the end of two years from now, they might do something.
