Next step of my recovery AND losing my job

As many of you know, (probably a few of you believe in WAY too much detail) my road to recovery has been a wonderful, blessed experience. I come to you today, again asking for your 2 cents. Last Thursday, after 7 wonderful days on Route 66, in Vegas, Roswell, and a host of other places I Was unexpectedly let go. I wasn't upset, other than losing my cell phone and laptop, but still......I had a plan in place already.

My wife and I have been talking over the prospect of opening a transitional living center/recovery house, for those fresh out of recovery, or those that need the extra guidance. We have the house to do it, though it will need some maintenance. My wife has the background to do it (she has an undergraduate in rehab therapy, and multiple counseling Masters) and I have the pure will to make this my life. I'm trying to get through all the non-profit paperwork, and pretty much working 16 hour days...but I have to admit, I am a bit lost when it comes to this. We have a partner of sorts, but he will be handling more of the maintenance side of things, as I am utterly useless when it comes to home repairs and the like. I'm handling all the paperwork, starting fund-raising, etc. Any suggestions out there?

I can't give you much help, but I do wish you all the success in tis new career.

You might try posting this on Horn Network or even Horn Depot, you might get a better response.

One idea I do have is to approach a local charity and ask how they got set up and going. You coud also look to local recovery groups, like AA or GA and see if they could give you some pointers (and maybe even supply you with some volunteers..).

First piece of advice, don't have partners.
Investors = if absolutely necessary
Partners = bad news

Ask yourself why you would need a partner?

Why do I need a partner? How else am I going to get free maintenance?

Besides, this is a God thing.....it isn't about me. Yes, I want to be able to maintain my home and keep my children fed, but it's bigger than I.

BHud, I am in Kerrville and in recovery too. I know a handful of 12 Step Ninjas out here who own and/or run Recovery Houses. I could probably get you some names and phone numbers if you're interested in their experience. I haven't done it, so I can't offer any experience, but I will say that from what I've heard around the campfire, there's more to it than one might imagine. Come to think of it, I know the guy who runs one of the "best known" one of these places in Austin. He's an acquaintance of my Sponsor who lives in Pflugerville. Anyway, just PM me if you're interested and I'll see what I can shake out for you.

Look up the Oxford House group. They run houses nationwide, and might be a good model for you to follow.

I was in recovery and lived in Kerrville for a while as well. Recovery houses are truly a great thing. I wish you all the best. More people like you are needed in this world.

That is an important question. There's lots of drama around those places. When a dude relapses and tries to get back in, you better have a plan that mutes the noise and destruction. And there will be both, trust me.

The models of these programs have been very successful. You do not need to reinvent the wheel....you can cookie cut the structure that has been working.

Blessings!
