Newt the Alpha Male

As a political moderate, I have to say I'm probably never going to be an enthusiastic Newt Gingrich Supporter.

That said, his win in South Carolina and his performance in the last two debates shows political skill to rarely displayed in this republic. It brings to mind other great political performances -- the usually genial Ronald Reagan saying indignatly "I'm paying for this microphone" and Richard Nixon's "Checkers" speech that kept him on the Republican ticket with Ike in 1952. Panned by many since, the "Checkers" speech was so powerful and masterful that the cameraman who filmed it had tears streaming down his cheeks. Clinton, whom I previously thought the most adroit political operative of the baby boom generation, never had a moment quite like Newt's on Thursday night.

Like Reagan and Nixon before, Newt found the voice to go directly to the people without being defensive or having his message filtered by an unfriendly media.

Yeah, looks like we'll hear a lot about that winning combination of lazy minorities and food stamps in the weeks to come

His "alpha-male"ness sure showed up late in life instead of during the vietnam war, where mr.tough guy squirmed his way out with deferments.

Like Rick Perry, Newt is fine without the political support of Crockett, Roger and Satchel. Looks like he's OK without support of the media elite or the Republican establishment -- so far. There will be numerous attempts to kill his candidacy. By necessity he'll be offensive rather than defensive. We're living in a different political world than the ones where Nixon and Reagan thrived. Gingrich has Nixon's outsized ego and comparable intelligence. But I think he has smarter enemies, at least among the politicians. The media so far, lacks a clear and credible voice against him.

I'm still not getting why Newt's bullying act has enamored so many. When one gets underneath his response to John King's invitation to comment on his former wife's allegations, he huffed and puffed, pivoted to an answer by blaming the media for protecting the President and gets rewarded with a standing ovation?
What the hell for?

Many on the right feel the "media" is out to get them and loved it when Newt resonded with indignation rather than resignation. Attacking the questioner and the media was way smarter than defending or apologizing for adultry Rather than responding to a story that's been "out there" for years as if it was fresh news, Gingrich acted as if it is old news. I would not have advised that kind of response, but in retrospect it was genius. Look at the mileage it got him. Nixon's point by point response on the Checkers case was certainly a more cheer-worthy story in that he honestly adressed the questions against him and threw in a lot of indignation and sympathy gathering. A point by point defense of Gingrich past marital behavior would be disastrous.

By next week, everybody will expect Newt to find something in a question that offends him and attack the questioner. His genius by that time will have become boring.

I, One Voter, of the United States, in Order to elect a more perfect President, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to myself and my Posterity, do ordain and establish my Approbation of either Newt or Romney as next President of the United States of America.

Everyone knows that voting for Newt is voting for the status quo. That just isn't what the party and the independent voters are looking for now. I know he has gained some popularity for now but it won't last. Once everyone settles down and digs into his past voting history, his association with corporate interests, and his lack of plan for doing something with the debt and the economy, they are going to start looking for an alternative to Romney again. The GOP is so very splintered right now that there is no possible way they are going to unite behind one candidate effectively enough to win a presidential election this year on their own. They need something to happen on the other side.

This has been the funniest primary I have ever witnessed and I hope it keeps going for awhile now. There are good GOP candidates that we never hear about and that don't get invited to the debates. I wish they would invite them into the debate series and let the public have a chance to see what they stand for.

What I do like about Newt is his rapier wit and combative personality. He won't go quietly like McCain did; never showing any emotion, never taking advatange of issues like Jeremiah Wright, etc. Newt will air BO's dirty underwear and there is plenty to air. Maybe Joe Six Pack will get it this time.

Newt has a fraction of the money Romney has to spend on his campaign and is leading the national polls for the GOP and just won an important state. That should tell you a lot about this guy. If he wins the GOP the money will pour in and he will be tough to beat.
