As a political moderate, I have to say I'm probably never going to be an enthusiastic Newt Gingrich Supporter.
That said, his win in South Carolina and his performance in the last two debates shows political skill to rarely displayed in this republic. It brings to mind other great political performances -- the usually genial Ronald Reagan saying indignatly "I'm paying for this microphone" and Richard Nixon's "Checkers" speech that kept him on the Republican ticket with Ike in 1952. Panned by many since, the "Checkers" speech was so powerful and masterful that the cameraman who filmed it had tears streaming down his cheeks. Clinton, whom I previously thought the most adroit political operative of the baby boom generation, never had a moment quite like Newt's on Thursday night.
Like Reagan and Nixon before, Newt found the voice to go directly to the people without being defensive or having his message filtered by an unfriendly media.
