In the most recent Real Clear Politics poll average in South Carolina, calculated entirely before last night's debate on CNN, Newt Gingrich has taken a two point lead over Mitt Romney.
RCP South Carolina Poll Average
Newt Gingrich 32.4
Mitt Romney 30.4
Ron Paul 13.4
Rick Santorum 11.2
Rick Perry 3.0
And anyone who watched that debate knows that Gingrich will likely pick up at least a few more points as a result of his performance.
If Santorum finishes fourth behind Ron Paul, his money is going to dry up and it will be difficult for him to go on to Florida. And if Santorum drops out, that will also benefit Newt Gingrich.
For those of you not paying attention, this race is going to be a long slog, which will likely continue to be competitive until at least April, probably May and possibly even into June. The media "experts" who have nearly all been predicting a fast finish for this race are wrong, yet again.
