As the primary season heats up and it becomes increasingly clear that this is going to be a long race without a fast knock-out punch, the debate in South Carolina may have actually had a few game changing moments, at least for newt Gingrich. Gingrich clearly won Monday night's debate, as a result of several well crafted orations. His best was in response to a question from Juan Williams about statements he made about giving inner city school kids jobs as janitors in their schools to help them earn money and develop a work ethic. Here is the exchange on YouTube:
Newt Gingrich's Standing Ovation at South Carolina GOP Debate
Gingrich received a standing ovation. I cannot recall ever having seen that before in a debate. In any case, with Rick Perry on his way out, Ron Paul doing his Ron Paul thing, Mitt Romney trying to establish himself as the inevitable victor, and both Santorum and Gingrich dividing a block of votes that would allow one of them to be a real challenger to Romney, Gingrich came out on top. And Santorum was the loser, if only because he did not distinguish himself, again.
We will have to wait and see, but Gingrich was already in second place in the polls in South Carolina before this debate. Some are now predicting him to pull out a surprise win in South Carolina on Saturday. And if he does that, then this race is not over by any means.
