With Ra'Shaad Samples (mutual interest) & Eldridge Massington (committing to USC) moving on, Texas has renewed/re-kindled their interest with Ft. Worth Southwest's Robbie Rhodes who was in Austin for the UIL State Track Meet running the 200m, 4x100 & 4x200, if I'm not mistaken! Robbie was a Jr. Day invitee but couldn't make it in due to his father's illness... appears he's leaning toward Baylor at the moment because they were on him much sooner... we shall see how this plays out in the next month or two!

Here's the latest from 247Sports/Hookem.com's Gerry Hamilton on the Friday/Saturday visit...

"Rhodes visit is done. He does now have an official offer from Mack Brown/Texas.

Rhodes' top two are Baylor and Texas. The visit reportedly went really well, but Rhodes isn't one that gets too excited about visits, and everything that goes with it. Just doesn't get blown away by things, or into the hype of recruiting.

He does know how much Texas wants him. That was made clear."

I agree with what you've said; however, Baylor will always give up an average of 30+ points a game and now they won't have the best player in college football scrambling around and making plays to make up for the defense's culpability. Their defense will not improve and their offensive scoring average will drop 20-something PPG.

Plus, people might spend a little more time preparing a game plan for Baylor. I know every team does try to prepare equally for every game; however....

"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others"

I know I sure don't want to lose to Baylor again.

As for Samples, what is it about players from Skyline? Just wondering if its individuals or if its the culture of the high school. Also, players we've signed like Mike Davis and Christian Scott have not really played up to their potential. Now I have heard good things about Davis and I haven't closed the book on him. Also, we got Peter Jinkens and I'm axious to see what he can do.

But it seems Mack has had issues with players and just curious if its just individuals, or since Dallas Skyline produces a lion share of D1 prospects that they tend to have bigger than average sense of entitlement.

You read my mind horn4jc, I would also like to know what was the deal with Samples and why we backed off or whatever.

Not to pick on Skyline kids, but it appears that most every recruit for the 08-10 years didn't pan out, but I digress! I agree with you 4jc, things have gone sideways with the kids from Skyline though...

Bishophorn, here's the skinny on Samples from my 'source' at one of the bigger recruiting services (like I have a source... jk!) who is legit... Ra'Shaad Samples was offered at the first Junior Day, as we know and was the '2nd Verbal commit' for that weekend, and then Sunday before he left, he told the coaches that he needed to talk it over with his parents! So he was the 'silent' commit that I posted about back in Feb... before he left Austin, the coaches (Wyatt & Brown I'm assuming) gave him 2 1/2 weeks or till after the 2nd J-Day to FIRM up his 'silent' commitment. Texas was probably going to offer Robbie Rhodes if he had shown for the 2nd J-Day in Austin which by the way, Robbie didn't show due to his father's illness and not because he was off at another J-Day some place else...

Samples' offer time-frame came & went and the coaches have moved and as it appears, Samples did as well. Soon after the expiration date, Samples broke his tibia-fibula above the ankle at the NFTC Camp up in the DFW area and Texas moved on with the offer to Rhodes a couple weeks ago when Rhodes was in Austin for the UIL state track meet.

Fast forward to today and the latest on Robbie Rhodes has not changed... Rhodes is keeping things very close to the vest and is choosing between Baylor & Texas even though he is gaining big interest from the big FBS schools in the country. Most of the recruiting services I've read say the Baylor leads for the Ft. Worth Southwest receiver, but knows that Texas wants him.... and they are saying that he's not the one who is impressed with all the flash & dash of facilities, etc... so Rivals.com, 247Sports/Hookem.com, LonghornInsider.com and others don't have any read on him at all. Robbie Rhodes is expected to make a decision by the end of June at the latest and that could come anytime between now & then!

With that said, Jesus Shuttlesworth/Eric Hahlin over at InsideTexas currently lists Rhodes at a 75% probable commit and over the last couple of years, he's been pretty close to most of his %'s. So take that with a grain of salt...

Should Texas strike out on Rhodes, they are taking notice & starting to recruit a 6-3, 190lb. kid at Manvel HS who transfered from Lamar HS in Houston, all this as a back-up plan...

Sorry for being so long winded here... more on this as it develops!

Re: ...what is it about players from Skyline?

Not sure, but Skyline has been in the news up here more than once recently, and it's not been good, for the most part.

So we lose to Baylor twice and we lose a kid to USC so now we are competing against Baylor for a commit saying we have to get him?

What's up?

Better to lose a couple to baylor than OU. What I think of is depth charts, and the fact that briles is a good recruiter and is producing on the field, at least on offense.
