Does any country do a good as job as New Zealand in promoting tourism and the beauty of their country?

I have really been wanting to go there but the flights are really expensive. Anyone have a good plan for going to NZ? I don't care if it's a bit chilly. I have been told to skip the north island and stay south. I was also considering renting a sleeper van and sleeping in it each night.
