New York City Hotels?

I don't even know where to begin to look.

My wife and I are planning to go up there this summer for a few days. We want to see the typical NYC tourists stops; Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Central Park, etc. Maybe see a Broadway show.

I have know idea where a decent place to stay is. Don't have a lot of cash, but want something near the action.

Thanks in advance.

Not a lot of cash as in how much per night?

I'd recommend Park Central Hotel. It's only a few blocks to Times Sqaure and the orange line subway is at your doorstep. It's across the street from Carnagie Hall. (and deli) We got a corporate rate for $262 per night but I'm not sure what the standard is. Nice hotel with room sizes that you are probably accustomed to.

If you just want a bed...Riverside Studios is not too bad. It's like a hostel for adults though. Bed, dresser and TV...not much more. Shared bathroom too. But, it's only a few blocks from the Dakota (Where Lennon was shot) and near the 76th street subway. (74th too by the Dakota/Strawberry Fields/Central Park) So, you're still in Manhattan. It's clean but far from fancy.About $150 per night...which is a steal for that area. Rooms are very tiny.

Both are relatively safe areas albeit the RS is in a quiet zone.

I'd recommend staying in Manhattan, but NY is real easy to navigate if you want to move areas. Stay away from Queens and the Bronx though. If you don't know the area, you may be dissapointed.

We stayed at the Affinia Manhattan this week and enjoyed it. Great location within walking distance of Times Square and right across the street from Penn Station so you could catch the subway anywhere. The rooms feature a kitchenette (although they look outdated).

i went several years ago, you need tostay cose to times square for boadway plays and subway. stayed at a quality inn in found on travelzoo for about 150.00 per nite. hotel was ok. if you get time take the water tour i cant remember the name of the bout used. this was well worth the trip. subways were very safe althought i was not on after 8pm. anytime around 5-6 pm will be crowded try to avoid this time. go see grand central station, its impressive. i found poeple were friendly and gave directions when asked.

Try Amsterdam Inn on 76th and Amsterdam. It is small, affordable, in a great neighborhood (upper west side), and close to a subway. The subways are safe.

I had a pretty good experience staying at the Soho Grande last time I was in the city. It's on Broadway and Canal and the back of the hotel looks out over Tribeca. A subway station is right behind the hotel as well. It's a funky hotel with an art deco minimalist kind of flavor to it. And you're probably a $10 cab ride from Times Square.

I loved the SoHo Grand also, but it is definitely not the place to go on a budget. But as the last few said, you don't need to be in Times Square to be convenient to it. In SoHo, the yellow and blue lines are very close, so you can get to Midtown, West Village, Central Park, WTC, etc. in minutes.
