new Union/GM contracts

Hook'em
Words fail"The United Auto Workers union won $5,000 signing bonuses and the possibility of sweeter profit-sharing checks as part of a new four-year contract with General Motors Co., two people briefed on the talks said Saturday.

The deal, which was reached late Friday, also includes a $2- to $3-per-hour pay raise for entry-level workers over the life of the contract and guarantees more union jobs, the people said.
In addition to the bonuses, workers could get profit-sharing checks that exceed the $4,000 that workers earned last year

so we are giving signing bonuses to people already "signed"
what were the union members going to do, go work for another government owned auto plant?
AND profit sharing of 4k? What profit do we taxpayers gets?

Plus NO increase to union members in cost of health plans, so who picks up the cost increases?

Aren't unions great?? I know I'd be willing to pay more for a car just because it was produced by union workers.

And why do they need "signing bonuses"? I thought that unemployment was so bad that they would be willing to take a job without one, just to get the salary.

So more money the company is on the dole for, while they make shittier and shittier cars. So in another decade or so, we'll be bailing them out again? Sounds grrrrrrrrreeeaaatt!

I can't wait till those ******** drive that entire industry in to the ground and there will be nothing to save, and we won't have to worry about bailing them out anymore.

I want to find out who at Gm ok'd this crap deal.
It smacksof vote buying.

There is not one concession given by GM that was needed to prevent any of those union members from leaving,

Why are all these uninformed conservatives up in a roar about what a private company does with its own employees?? I thought good ole conservatives believed in staying out of other people's businesses.

Last I checked- the treasury announced in April it plans to sell its remaining minority, 33% stake over the late summer, early fall, with zero management oversight in the mean time. Then in June they confirmed this plan, and said they will sell at an attractive share price.

If GM wants to reward their employees that way- for better or worse, its their choice to make.

Well until the Treasury gets all of its money back, then it isn't Just their money.

And because they are already planning to give in to the unions demands, they are going to be in financial troubles another decade down the line if not sooner, and we'll have another slapdick prez and congress say they are too big too fail and bail em out again. Rinse-repeat. When does the idiocy stop?

Are you really trying to defend this by saying that we should keep our noses out of this business?

Everybody get ready for the Race card, here it comes........When the back is against the wall cry Racism!!!!

Who is calling a race card?

Not sure what there is to discuss here- I have opinions on McDonalds, Ford, Microsoft, Oracle, GE, Apple also- but given my ownership of these firms, like GM, is also a minority, non-managing control stake, there's nothing I can really do other than vote for board members when there is an open seat.

This thread seems like a cool way for some posters to tell people "I hate Obama and also know nothing about business!"

**** GM. Not that I ever have, but I will never buy anything GM, new or USED. (some people think buying used doesn't matter, but it does)

Didn't our government fire GM's last CEO for some reason? I'm guessing the same would have happened here if the "negotiations" hadn't gone according to script.

**** Obama.
