New turf at the Disch?

I just heard on the FSN broadcast that the turf at Disch-Falk FIeld will be changed either next year or sometime in the coming years.

I thought Augie wanted to keep the turf the way it is because it better suits his style of play.

Rumor (story?) a while back was that the turf would be replaced with grass whenever the current turf wears out, estimated to be in a couple of years.

Someone correct me if I have the facts wrong on any of that.

I believe Augie mentioned he like the new "field turf" that is being replaced around the country. He was really pleased with the way it played during the Tech series, and pretty much confirmed that they would most likely be installing the new "field turf" when they could get around to it.

It could or could not be true, but Greg Lucas is a freaking moron. I wouldn't count anything that comes out of his mouth as a legitimate source.

this thread reeks of off-season.

and why not? it pretty much is.

Visiting with our players last weekend, I asked what they thought about playing on field turf.

To a man they disliked it. Said it scratched and that sand/ground rubber bedding got in everything -- eyes, nose, mouth and under jersy tops and in their pants when they slid. Since they ALWAYS got that classic red clay stuff in the same spots, I interpret their comments as field turf stuff was worse or they wouldn't have made a point to mention it. Also, they guys looked slower than molassas running on it. Sitting behind our dugout on the 1B side, we got a great view of our guys running from 2B to 3B. They looked awfully slow. To a point the ONLY time Jordan's been thrown out was on Field Turf at Tech then last weekend at K State.

So I'm guess that's exactly what we'll get so we're MORE like everyone else than everyone else.

The difference between classic clay and the rubber in field turf basically involves water. Water will basically get rid of clay or dirt (eventually) but the rubber never goes away. It does get into everything and it is annoying. Imagine very small rocks in your shoes. Even though they're small, they're annoying and sometimes they flat out hurt.

I recently spoke to someone in the AD about this on a flight back to Austin and was told field turf is under consideration. The problem is maintaining it in combination with the red dog clay. They don't mix well and vacuuming the soil from the field turf is not an option because of the stuff talked about here. I don't know much more about it, but it sounds like a bad idea to switch to it.

There's the other kind of artificial turf that has the sand base instead of the rubber base. They use it at Burger Center in Austin (on the football field). I wonder how it would work for baseball?
