According to a Swindel tweet.

Clayton Kershaw working on his craft this morning @UTBaseballEQ Been working with Skip since he was 15

I hope that Skip might mention this to his recruits, probably has. This could be a big reason we have such excellent pitching year after year.

I wish we had an equal like picture to show some big time hitters and get them to sign.

Also the new 35 man roster is out.

The Link

Seems that Kirby Bellow will sit the year out with an injury, Holden Helmink transferred to San Jac. Matthew Moynihan and Mark Gottsacker also not listed. Can't say what happened to them.

Brandon Belk has done fairly well with the Giants and Drew Stubbs with the Reds, but nothing great so far. A few other recent players flashed briefly. Spike was in the majors for his glove and he got on any way he could.

David Chalk could hit some, but was mostly a glove guy in the majors. He did make consecutive All Star games with the Angels in 1974-75.

I guess the last most solid hitter in the pros over a lengthy career would have to go to Keith Moreland. He had a .279 career average over twelve seasons and won a Series ring with the Phillies in 1980 as a catcher.

The best was no doubt one Bibb Faulk who also played twelve pro seasons with a career average of .314.

Thanks to the "Black Sox" scandal he took over for "Shoeless" Joe Jackson in left field for the White Sox in 1920.

I was very fortunate to be able to talk to Bibb on several occasions at Longhorn practices and games. He would come to nearly all day games and would always wear a coat and tie. Then if it was a nice day he would after the game head over to Barton Springs and go swimming. He loved doing that.

He was quite a guy and never minced words about things. In fact during his playing days in the majors he earned the nickname "Jockey" because he would rag opposing players so much. No wonder he always sat on the first base side. He probably enjoyed the "Wild Bunch."

I actually looked up Stubbs' stats after I made that post. He has an okay OBP, but his career BA is nothing to write home about. Belt has definitely had a solid career at the plate thus far. It'd be great to see him have a long and successful career. It just amazes me that a program as historic as Texas doesn't have more players that had great pro careers.

Cool stories about Bibb.

Just randomly picked a very good baseball team (Red Sox) from last year and looked at their pitchers, defensive starters, and DH. Only 5 of 20 guys (25%) played 4-year university ball...Arizona St., Bowling Green (2), Santa Clara, and Yale. Then the 3 Juco guys...Angelina (JC), Grayson County (JC), Santa Rosa (JC).

8 of 20 large contributors (40%) played at least some form of college ball. Only 1 (5%) played at a major university known for highly competitive baseball. That's just the nature of the pro game.

Not surprised at all UT hasn't had more ex-players with solid MLB careers. We've had tons top out in the minors just like most of the other historically elite baseball programs. So many kids competing for a big league spot...HS Seniors, college, and minors leaguers at several levels...so few MLB roster spots available. The odds are monumentally stacked against them.
