And no I dont mean Nu metal

I m a huge music fan but have always been partial to hard rock, metal, punk and their many sub-genres. I cut my teeth in my early teens on Zeppilin, OZZY, VH, preist, black flag and Kiss. Got into HArder stuff like metallica and slayer in my later teens. Grunge held me over for a while in the early 90's but after that If i wanted a hard rock fix I was having to go back and rediscover bands that were a decade old......

....UNtill the late 2000's. It seems like in the past 5 years or so there has been a resurgence of QUALITY hard rock rock acts . Seems like alternatives to pop douche metal has been easier and easier to find in bands like Kylesa, High on Fire, The Sword and Graveyard. These bands arent scared to float between the various types of metal styles even within the same album.

Does any one have any suggestions beyond the ones i've mentioned? I love this suff as much as I did when I was 13, but I'm now 43 and as domesticated a family man as you can get so Its tough to find out about new music.

Are you familiar with Warbringer? I am old school when it comes to my metal and have similiar if not an exact path as yours with it. I was lucky enough to see the first two Slayer tours with not very many people there as they were not famous yet.

I find Warbringer to be a band that I would have loved even then. Here, give a listen.

Warbringer - Living Weapon

And here is August Burns Red whom you may or may not be familiar with. They got a lot more attention after their latest album, Leveler.

If you like Meshuggah and Soulfly you will like these guys, especially this song. Great energy.

August Burns Red - Internal Cannon

I'm not sure how many qualify as "new" bands, but if it's new to you that's what matters right?

Baroness: Red album and the Blue album

Ghost: Opus Eponymous

Clutch: The Elephant Riders

3 Inches of Blood: Advance and Vanquish

Therion: Theli and Secret of the Runes

The Darkness: Permission to Land

Goblin C*ck: Bagged and Boarded

Baroness has the most contemporary sound of the bands and albums I've listed. High quality musicianship, interesting arrangements, and a bit of an arty feel. Vocals may take some getting used to if you are in your 40s like me.

Ghost's music delights me more than anything I've heard in the last 10 years. Understated, melodic, and rocking. All the songs are driven forward by their tremendous rhythm section. Kitschy concealed identities and tongue in cheek devilish themes only add to the fun. Blue Oyster Cult is the band I hear them compared to most often. The album has no filler at all and the songwriting is truly grand in my opinion. Really catchy and the more I listened, the more I liked it.

Clutch is cool, heavy, pentatonic riffs delivered with conviction. Vocals are an acquired taste, but they fit the feel of the music. They sometimes have a bit of a swing feel. Riffs are kinda sabbathy, but that's just to provide a very rough point of reference. They have a very distinct sound of their own.

3 Inches of Blood is a super fast and high energy metal band. They are kinda tongue in cheek too, and their over the top sound is almost like they are more than halfway mocking the genre. High pitched vocals coupled with the speed and high energy kinda remind me of a more modern sounding judas priest at times. Loses points in my book for having a second kid screaming along with the vocalist a la linkin park type bands.

Therion's music is big, overwrought, and laughably ambitious, so I really like em. Symphonic pretensions don't keep this from being cool heavy metal with strong melodies and arrangements. They like doing concept albums. Any old metal fan will love the goofy "Theli" album cover. Bonus points from me for that!

The Darkness have kind of a Queen meets AC/DC feel. They've got a real arena rock vibe that I enjoy. Vocals are silly and over the top, but they're still fun and the guitarist is really good at what he does. Image is kinda glam but they are a rock band underneath it all.

GC is one of those project bands by one guy who writes all the parts. They are heavy, plodding, and dirge-y. Songs aren't that great, but I like their sound. Sound a little bit like baroness if you tried them and liked em. They're also theatrical like ghost and project a similarly occult image. Great name too!

OK, I've never heard of the band Goblin Cock, but with a name like that, I definitely intend to check them out.

I'm more of a fan of old school, driving rock & roll. I've been listening lately to a relatively new band called the Jompson Brothers:

Jompson Brothers

Their sound is a blend of 1970s arena rock, Southern Rock, and the blues rock that was popular on the Austin scene in the 1990s. They would be at ease in the same lineup as, e.g., Ian Moore, Arc Angels, Storyville, etc.

I would recommend two tracks to start: "On the Run" (definite Bad Company influence here) and "Ride My Rocket" (yes, the title is awesome and ridiculous).

Ok this is post Metallica but also not totally new- a band from Germany called Rammstein, with their song Du Hast. If this song doesn't get you out of your chair you are clinically dead.

Du Hast- Rammstein

Mastodon
Coalesce
Loincloth

You can go a little more toward indie rock and listen to the Melvins or Unsane (will be together in Austin in the coming months).

Godflesh, the Justin Broadrick project prior to Jesu is pretty great, if mechanical sounding.

You can also go all weird and mathy with Mouth of the Architect or the Behold the Arctopus.

There was a top model out of NYC back in the 90s, don't recall her name, who was a BIG Melvins fan. She was prettier in person than even her ads but whenever I'd see her she just seemed so much hotter knowing she dug the hell out of them.

I would be sexually attracted to a chick that looked like whoopi goldberg if she was into the Melvins. My junk works that way.

Loincloth used to include a guitarist named Pen Rollings who was previously in one of the earliest versions of math rock, Breadwinner, who put out less than 10 recordings on the Merge label (Superchunk's imprint, which also carries the likes of Spoon). I love **** like that.

Skull Defekts is an experimental band that does both ambient darkness and arty, metalish rock that fits in with Loincloth/Meshuggah type angularity or Melvins-like drone.

There is a Finnish label, Ektro, that specializes in ****** up latter-day kraut rock (having even released some recordings by Faust). I think the label is owned by the guys in Circle, who have some great grooves made heavy by near-metal guitar riffage. Some of their stuff goes ambient, and some post-rock. Andexelt and Prospekt are two albums worth listening to.

Anyway, Cirlce has a number of offshoot projects, one of which is a more deliberately metal take on dirge grooving. They are called Pharaoh Overlord.

Other dirgey outfits like Earth or Sleep are also worth tracking down.
