New laptop question

I'm about to buy a new laptop for my fiancee. While its going to be hers for the next few years, its also going to be a stop-gap computer for me (i'm going to buy a higher spec one in a few months).

We don't need it to have all the bells and whistles, just a good high quality, somewhat low cost laptop that can handle all the basic applications, (office, etc).

I'm not the most computer savvy guy, so i'd like to hear your opinions on what the good ones are out there just for everyday use.

Thanks.

The Apple MacBook product line swept every top position in Consumer Reports' laptop test report this month. Their customer support also received perfect scores--well ahead of any other vendor. I've used a MacBook Pro for the past year and a half (and Macs for as long as they've been around) and wouldn't consider anything else. I use a Dell laptop at work every day and it's no match for my MacBook.

Not looking for macs. We want to be compatible across the computers we have, and for work, so any pc laptops would be appreciated.

I urge you not to discount a MacBook so readily. I use a Dell at work and my Mac at home on work stuff all the time. Office is compatible across platforms. If I need to, I can run Windows under Mac OSX, but I rarely need to. Compatibility is not an issue for the vast majority of users. Nor is cost if you look at the total cost of ownership. Including your time working through Windows issues--and you will. If you decide to go PC/Windows at least you can never say you haven't been made aware of the best solution available. At least take a trip to an Apple store for enlightenment so you can remember what you're missing out on when you're trying to recover from the latest Windows virus, spyware, etc.

It is useless to argue. It is physically and emotionally impossible for the mac fanboys to leave a computer thread alone even when the OP specifically say that they do not want a mac.

Apparently some Macs have issues too:

Compusa.com has a $339 laptop right now. Even if you don't like that one, it might help you set your price floor/ceiling.

FWIW, I have a nearly 6 year old Toshiba that does everything it needs to quite well: streaming video, word processing , play/burn movies........ Paid less than $500 for it way back when and it has served me well.

jesus f'ing christ he wants a SOMEWHAT LOW COST LAPTOP. that's one of his parameters. instead of trying to convince him to change his parameters, work within them.

if i said i had 25k to buy a new car with, would you try to sell me on the 5 series BMW? if so you're a ****** salesman because i would tell you to f off.

i'll say it again...you can get a very serviceable dell outlet laptop for $600 that will work great for the next few years.

It's a little bit more expensive than a Dell, but Lenovo (the laptop spin-off of IBM) makes very good, reliable laptops.

Chill man. I didn't see a dollar amount given, did you? MacBooks start under a grand which includes a bunch of great apps that you may need to buy for a PC. In the end there's usually not much of a cost difference.

Whatever. While you're over at the Dell outlet why don't you get one of their music players (sorry, the name escapes me)? Oh yeah, I recall they put that fine piece of engineering out of it's misery. At least I think you can still find a Zune in the Clearance section.

Forgive me. The minds that bring you PCs and Windows are just such easy targets. Enjoy!

Between the kids and I we have 5 laptops in the house all of different brands. I would rate the Acer as the best overall deal, then the Toshiba, Dell and Compaq. The Mac is ok but actually don't use it much, other than my daughter who uses it for videos and music. Of all of these the Acer is the only 1 that has not had to have something repaired or replaced.

It gets old when Mac douchebags threadshit every single computer thread. You said your piece at the beginning.

For $550 delivered you can get a Dell laptop with 4GB Ram, 320GB HDD, 15.6" screen, webcam, etc. That system will work fantastically for a few years, which is all it's meant for anyway.

I have a toshiba satellite I bought for under $500 and the only problem I have with it is the battery S-U-C-K-S.

I bought an extended life battery for like $100 and it isn't much better. I think I can get maybe 45 minutes of use and the battery craps out.

Other than that, the computer has been awesome for what I paid.

Excellent example of why a douche like Justin Long is the perfect spokesperson for a brand like Apple.
