New Job - Giving Notice

So I've decided to take some time away from my industry and take a job that will offer equal pay, with fewer hours, more flexibility, etc.

I got and accepted an offer today for just such a job. They want me to start in 3 weeks.

Dilemma: my boss (to whom I will give notice) is out until tomorrow a.m. Though 2 weeks is the standard notice, I'm in a client-service type business and I know even three weeks is going to be a big kick in the balls to the company. Now I'm technically just giving him 2 1/2 weeks (since he's back Wednesday vs. Monday).

Any advice on how I can handle this to soften the blow and make it less stressful for me? Should I call him in NYC tonight to avoid "springing" it on him in the morning?

PS - I begged the new job for a later start date, but due to training, they have to have me in three weeks.
 
It can wait unitl tomorrow, but it has to be done first thing in the morning. I've done it so many times I have the conversation down pat:

Walk in anannounced.
Sit down.
You: "I need to talk to you about something."
Yoru boss: "Yes"
You: "I've been offered another job and I've decided to accept it."

Don't beat around the bush. Just thow it out in the open. LIke ripping off a bandage. The rest of the conversation will flow naturally from there. Why you are leaving, new job, etc.

Just offer to do whatever you can do for the next 2.5 weeks to soften the blow or help their transition. Ultimately, they can either tell you to kick rocks now or accept your help. If you take the high road on everything, they still might dislike you, and there's no getting around that.
 
Agree with Bernard.

If you wanted to get a 1/2 day jump on it today, you could go talk to your friendly HR person, unless you think your boss will think you're going around him by doing that. That would get you "officially" down a day earlier.

In my opinion, any lead time greater than 2-weeks and you're doing them a favor. Management responsibilities (and pay) includes dealing with turnover.

I just went through this, and I would recommend that you simply walk in and hand him a resignation letter that is clear and concise. By doing this you cover yourself and the company, and it basically heads off possibly dealing with any counter offers and such at the pass so to speak. Good luck, and I hope you're happy with your new job. Also despite leaving them in a crunch 3 weeks is a LONG time. I did that too this time, and will never do it again. Two weeks. That is plenty of time. 3 is simply too long to be persona non grata. MIserable. They will move on like all organizations do.
 
I don't understand why you are stressing about this. You will be providing them more than the typical 2 weeks notice. If your boss is angry with you for leaving, giving him an extra week notice will make no difference.

And besides, why is it any concern to you anyways. You have a new job. You should never burn bridges, but you have done nothing inappropriate.

The part I left out is some of the long-standing professional and personal relationship I have with this boss (hanging out with he and his wife, etc.)

Nonetheless, it's a done deal now. Had a talk with him first thing this morning and things are fine. He's dissappointed but supportive. Said (half joking) he's spending the rest of the day thinking of ways to get me to stay.

I'm now a free man.
 
So the first thing you do after resigning is come and be unproductive by posting on Hornfans? What did someone say about not mailing it in during your 2.5 weeks.
