New House = New Grill!! Any recommendations?

I'm sure nobody here has any sort of opinion whatsoever on what type of grill is the best out there.

I just bought my first home with my wife and we are in need of an outdoor grill. Is there a grill that meets both the not-so-gigantic stainless steel model & not so small I can only fit a few steaks and a couple burgers??

I'd like a nice grill that is big enough to cook it all but isn't as hefty and 'tinny' as the big stainless ones I see at Lowe's/Home Depot.

Anyone have any grills they'd recommend? Thanks!!

I will tell you the same thing that I said last night to another South African Horn who is getting ready to move into his first house with his wife. Go to Academy. Better prices and selection. I have a stainless steel three burner Char Broil with a side burner. It was not all that pricey or hard to put together. I would certainly recommend a gas grill for every day cooking; it just takes too long to heat up coals on a weeknight. I enjoy having a side burner to do things like peppers, mushrooms, and onions that may be smoky inside. I can cook them at the same time as I'm doing fajitas. Works well.

I'm still not sure how large of a grill you want but I bought a 4 burner Charbroil stainless last year from Lowes and its been great. I prefer charcoal but wanted a gas grill because of its ease and speed. I don't know how long you want to wait but I bought mine while Lowe's was having their Father's Day sale. I will be buying a new Weber Kettle charcoal grill in a couple of weeks. I would also check Sears, Kenmore has some nice small grills.

mpt, the price on the grill you linked is outrageous. I would expect a model like that to be $250, not $650. What am I missing? Does it slaughter the pig for you also?

I don't really see much difference between the one you linked and this:The Link which is $170 at Academy.

Here's the Charbroil one similar to mine, but with a few more features and a little more expensive. The Link

I have a 2 burner Weber Genesis Silver A- that I bought on sale a few years ago at Home Depot. No problems with it- still running like a champ. May be a little pricier than Charbroil or the Academy brands- but fires up fast- and works.

That 3-burner one linked above for $170 is very similar to what we have and have had it several years - I love it. My brand is Capt'n Cook and got it at Barbecues Galore. It'll be more pricey there, probably get more stainless steel and some service incuded, so I'd go for the 3-burner guy at Acadamy.

I am a Brinkmann fan. The Link

I have had mine for about 5 years now and I have never had to replace a single part. I am probably going to need to get some new grill top grates pretty soon, just getting older and rusty and I probably haven't kept it as clean as I should have.

Thanks, all. I'm probably going to go with a four burner just for the size. I'll check out the spots you all recommended and go from there. Thanks for the advice.

Good grillin',

If you can find one that you can convert to natural gas instead of propane, I'd highly recommend it. I have had a Holland Grill for almost 9 years now and have been very happy with it. With that said, I have a number of friends that have the Weber Genesis series and are pleased with them. My brother-in-law has one of those big stainless Jenn-Airs that they sell at Lowe's but those are mighty pricey.

Holland Grills

It's the best grill I've ever used and I've used a wide variety of grills. If you want a cheap grill, you have plenty of options.

I think it's possible to go too big. We don't entertain much so it's usually just my wife and I. We've got a pretty big 4 burner stainless model that looks nice, but when you want a really hot flame for searing something, you gotta turn on extra burners. Seems pretty wasteful for cooking 2 small pieces of tuna. With the cavernous area under the hood, the heat from just one burner disperses a lot. In retrospect a quality smaller grill would have been better, but we got a good price.

Does anyone have any experience with the brands they sell at Barbecues Galore? I was looking online at the Capt'n Cook models and they looked like they're made from quality materials and they are good looking and good-sized. I've never heard of the brand though. Any opinions? (Or other suggestions for similar gas grills in that price range- maybe even a little less expensive). I was looking at the generic PerfectFlame ones at Lowe's and thought they looked pretty good but then I read some really bad reviews so I'm skeptical. Apparently they do not hold up well and Lowe's does not carry any replacement parts (and they are exclusive to Lowe's).

I will back him up on the BBQ galore turbo. I have one that was a hand-me-down from my dad when he installed his Lynx built-in grill (you think $600 is expensive, ****). That Turbo has been the best grill that I have ever laid my hands on. It's probably 15 years old and in excellent exterior condition. It could use a new set of grates and some new burners, but it still cooks like a champ. Built from strong material that will last. If you doubt the build quality, go lay hands on at the store and then run over to Academy and take a closer look at that Brinkmann. Will they both cook a nice steak day 1 out the box, sure. Show me a decade old Brinkman that is in impeccable exterior and functional condition. Like anything else, you tend to get what you pay for.
