New Horns Look

Holmes and Myles are gone. Ridley, and EBay at C, and Lammert, maybe Barnett and (Shaq looks promising) at F. Taylor should stay another year. Add Roach and Davis, w/Yancy, Holland, Felix (ugh) and Shaka is guard rich and front court lean.

Oggs is gone. Lanier should stay. Shaka is bringing Morrell and possibly his S+C guy Roose, which would push Wright out. Springmann is a marginal value add with his recruiting ability; Lucas is probably a bigger splash for major recruiting efforts but I think he's gone if he doesn't get a spot on the bench.

Thoughts on coaches/bench and lineup situation for next year?

He'll be warming pine I'm pretty sure if he comes back. I don't see him as a factor at all, now that he's questioninig his return for health reasons.

I guess if HAVOC is going to work we're going to need a deep guard bench. So having 6 viable guards is actually pretty key for us. If I estimate correctly, we have one scholarship available so, Shaka and co. can hopefully lock up another big man in the 15 recruiting class. Still lots of big man talent unsigned.

HAVOC demands an extremely high level of conditioning from the players running it. Roose knows what Shaka needs to get out of his players to effectively run that scheme. I think Wright is out.

When Pender's got here with his up tempo game, (both O & D), it brought out the best talents of all players out. Additionally, it created a fan frenzy at the box office and suddenly Jody wasn't out drawing the men anymore!! Those were heady days for Longhorn Basketball. Helped turn Austin into an NCAA favorite Sub-Regional site, etc. Am very hopeful that those days are returning. Everything is in place. Biggest thing missing will be Barbara Jordan sitting in her wheelchair at the end of the scorer's table giving that EVIL EYE to the ref, Sue Kennedy.

As for me? If Steve has pushed me out of our football seats of the last 38 years, guess my family can go down the street for some hoops! Because kids, I AM READY FOR "40 MINUTES OF HAVOC!"

I do not understand the need to rag on Felix. He is has been a player who has done whatever was asked of him .

And I'll take him over Taylor any day.

Is Taylor ready for the NBA? No.
Does he need another year at Texas to get better? Yes.
Should he leave early for the NBA? I sure hope so.

He has talent, but it's street ball talent. His basketball IQ is not good. How many times during this past season would he ignore his teammates at the end of games and make the inevitable mistake or turnover - a travel, double dribble, not getting the ball over mid court in 10 seconds, etc.

And now we have players saying they haven't heard from Taylor since the season ended and are giving him his space. What the hell. I hope he has been going to class. Can he get better under Shaka? Yes, but only if he is willing to listen and put his team and teammates first.

Season basketball tickets in the arena are expensive. And we haven't heard yet from Patterson about his plans for fleecing us in '15/'16.

If you guys think that Felix isn't going to play much next year then you haven't truly looked at the kids that have played and flourished under Shaka. Felix is very similar to a guard that played for Shaka named Joey Rodrigues who took them to a land far far away from Austin called the "final four" and he wasn't nearly as talented offensively. If he can commit to conditioning this off season, I think he will be a regular in the rotation.

Felix will get a lot of playing time, but he and Rodrigues are totally different. Rodrigues was a pure pg, felix is not.

I'll give Felix credit for doing what was asked of him. He filled his role when he was needed. I'll also say that he probably wasn't coached up much. He did produce at times, but wasn't consistent and made a lot of mistakes. His possession to turnover ratio (3/1) is absurdly high. I hope he can do better (find some consistency and learn to make better decisions) in Shakas system.

I'd probably have to disagree completely with the LonghornDad assessment of Taylor's ability. I wouldn't say his skill level is remotely close to that of Felix. Taylor does many things well and is a bonafied starter. Felix is a supporting role player/bench sub at best. Whatever Taylor was doing last year was probably a result of the dysfunction in the program. Taylor probably was under a lot of pressure to produce when no one was sure who else was supposed to be that go to guy.

Felix is a role player at best. Taylor looked pretty good to me until his injury earlier this year and hasn't been the same. I felt the team had a leash on them and were afraid to put it up and afraid to make mistakes for fear of being benched. That's the total opposite of what you want from your team. Shaka will instill confidence in his teams and the ball will be going up a lot.

Watching a lot of film on Taylor when he was in high shool, he was a pass first pg. But when he came to UT he became a shoot first pg, which in my opinion hurt him and the team. Not having great options to pass the ball to as a pg, probably had something to do with that. Taylor can be a really good player if he can ever develop a consistant mid range jump shot.

Different coach and different offense will yield different results. Who knows how good any of these guys could be? Just because Felix has certain issues does not mean he can't/won't change this year. We'll see.

Well I think it's a bit of a cop out to blame the program for Taylor's issues.

To be specific, I wasn't questioning his ability - I was referencing his street ball mentality and poor basketball iq. And he played worse at the end of games when he tried to do everything himself and chunked floaters instead of passing on the pick and roll. Couple that with his travels or not getting the ball over the 10 second line. Just trying too hard to be the man.

And now hearing from players that they haven't heard from him and are giving him his space tells me he isn't a team player.

That's why I'll take Javan.

Javan wasn't recruited to be the starting PG his first year or maybe even ever. Never the less he came in and did a tremendous job.

and he did a good job this year. Look at his stats. He avg 8.27 pts per game and his shooting % was very respectable . He came in off the bench many many times and dropped a 3 pter which lifted the team.
His turnover to steal or even ***'t ratio is not great but if you watched him play game after game he more than earned his schollie. He ALWAYS, as BO likes to say punched above his weight.

I think he will thrive under Smart and I know Smart will appreciate him

Felix is not the ideal full court press guy. I think he is good at coming of the bench and making a few threes.
