New guy in town looking for cool apartments

Hello all, I am new to the board and I'm about to be new to Austin. I'm gonna do an internship in Austin, party for a while, and then go to grad school at UT. I'm looking to get into a nice apartment complex with a lot of partying. Anybody know anything about University Commons, Melrose, College Park at the Landings, Jefferson Commons etc? Thanks for any help. It should be an exciting Fall in Austin!

Gables-TownLake is nice...and the new one on West and Third is nice too. The ones you mentioned are on Riverside I think. They are okay but you are in a sort of sketchy part of town.

If you want to do a lot of partying, move to West Campus.

Very interesting. I was looking at those places because they all have similar or identical complexes in Gainesviille, which is where I am now. I figured since they were all close together that it was a good area, but, having never been to Austin I didn't know.

Anything you all suggest that fits what I'm wanting would be given a real close look.

As for cost, I would like to keep living expenses (rent, electric, cable etc.) at or under $500/month if I could.

I'm not familiar with exactly what/where West campus is. I don't want a dorm room, and couldn't get one anyway since I'm just interning(95% sure) at St. Edwards.

Thanks again for your help

I suppose the reason I figured places like the Landings and University Commons would be good is that they DO have apartments where the total cost is going to be about $450 a month. The rental market for college kids is simply drastically different than that which you guys may find in the 30-55 year old market. An individual lease in a 4-bedroom apt. in one of these complexes in Austin meets what I am looking for. I just need to stick with my original choices and select from one of those. Thanks anyway

an individual lease? I assume you won't mind having a couple of crack whores for roommates. Let us know how your search turns out, should be interesting.

The search is almost over. Probably gonna be College Park-landings. All those complexes have outstanding amenities packages, like washer/dryer in unit, fully furnished, fitness centers etc. And all of them are occupied by UT/Austin college students at a 99% rate. That is what I want. I'll assume very few of those are crackwhores .
I would like to know a lot more about the west side. Somebody else mentioned that area. As long as the complex is nice and is dominated by college students, I would be interested. I have looked and looked, and couldn't find anything on that side. The Gables certainly look nice, but are too expensive and look to host an older crowd. Thanks for all your help.

I used to live at College Park-The Landings. I can help you out.

The neighborhood sucks. Riverside sucks. If you value your life don't drive down E. Riverside at 2am when all of those drunks are spilling out of that huge Tejano bar. You will see more crazy driving between 1:50am-2:10am at that intersection than you've ever seen in your life. I hope you can live off of McDonalds, BK, and Taco Bell, because there are no decent food options in that area unless you want to drive.

The babe factor at CP-The Landings is incredible. Having a bad day? Walk by the pool during the summer. It'll help...unless you get utterly depressed that you are single.

If you are single, wait till Friday night. Alcohol flows freely. Parties spill out into courtyards, parking lots, etc. If you can't find a party at CP-The Landings, you are a complete loser and should kill yourself. Drinking for free every weekend is not out of the realm of possibility. Drunk people wander the apartment grounds all night. If you're lucky, some drunk chicks will wander your way as you sit out on your front patio. It's been known to happen.

The shuttle bus to UT sucks. It used to be worse when CP-The Landings was the last stop on the shuttle. They reversed it and made it the first stop while I lived there. However, a bunch of ******** started driving their cars and parking at the first bus stop and then boarding the bus. So at 9:00am the bus stop feels like Grand Central Station.

Hopefully they finally put speed bumps in that ******* complex. I don't know how many times I was backing out of my parking spot, and almost got hit by some stupid soroity ***** going 55mph in her Eclipse and flipping me off as she yapped away on her cell phone. I don't miss that place. But I do miss the swimming pool. Maybe I'll go crash that place this weekend. haha

Re: The West Side of town

If you're looking mainly for cheap rent and good keg parties, you've made a good choice living on East Riverside. The west side of town does run a mostly older crowd. I live off of Far West near the first shuttle stop and there aren't many parties at all at my complex. It's an older crowd. There are SOME students, but they are mixed in with some professionals and some families. I've never gotten a visit from Johnny Law for drinking out on my patio until 5am but you won't see huge bashes like at Riverside. The Northwest side of town is also plagued with computer geeks who work at Motorola, Dell, IBM, etc. Thankfully the recent economic downturn has sent these cockroaches scurrying.

Don't confuse the comments above with the "West Campus" area. West Campus is the area just west of UT. Thus the name! Parties are good there but rent is ridiculous. Don't expect to pay sub-500 rent unless you've got 4 or 5 people packed into an old, tiny house. If you don't like Greeks don't live in that neighborhood. And I'm not talking about people from Zakynthos.

Thanks man. That's some wierd ****. Not knowing anybody in Austin and wanting a party scene, what you say about CPL is exciting. But, damn. Why must the nieghborhood suck? I think I should stay in that area and type of apartment, given my current funds and wish to party.

I am familiar with what you're sayin' about the fast drivers in the parking lot. I've got the situation now in my complex near UF. Rich, jewish chicks from Miami on their cell phones in their Lexus come flyin by at 70 mph. But they are all hot!!

Are any of the other complexes in that area nicer than CPL? Like University Commons, Melorse etc. I guess it is mainly the Riverside area....
