New Grill

ok,
Time to get a new grill, and I need some recommendations. I don't want to spend over $500.. that is my limit. Right now the grill in the lead is a Char-broil 3 bunner infrared model that Home Depot has for $449. I am a bit concerned as some reviews stated they had a problem getting the grill very hot. That is no good because I like to sear steaks around 600. I don't know if the grill temp is VERY different than the thermostat in the lid maybe since it is infrared... anyway... I am very open to suggestions.
Oh, and I do want gas.

I can vouch for Weber gas grills, especially if you have a budget of $500, as you're best buy for the $$$.

There isn't a close 2nd IMO!!

I've owned 2 in a 25+ year span, that I use on average of 3 times a week, sometimes for hours on end, and they've never failed me.

If you want gas, and you're in the $500 range, you can't beat a Weber Genesis series grill.

BBQ season is pretty much over and I expect HD and Lowes will be having sales pretty soon.

Yes, I know that we grill year-round in Texas, but once it turns cold, people quit cooking and eating outdoors in most of the country.

good time to be buying. I would look for a weber genesis at home depot/lowes/etc. they will be trying to get rid of them around this time..Weber is the way to go

I bought one for $200 at home depot a few years back.

Ok, from what I have seen, for $500 I can get into a Weber Spirit but not the Genesis line. Also, why does Weber put the controls on the side where I want to put my meat before I cook or after?
Another issue I have with Weber, is that they don't know the difference between grilling and BBQing.... not sure I can purchase a product from that company, I will have to get other thier cooking ignorance...
Anyone know anything about the infrared cooking machines?

You might want to send your feedback to Weber. They actually go "into the field" and get feedback from people who use their products. A lot of that feedback was used in their Genesis line. I love mine. The controls would be nice off that side panel, but it is a great grill.

I have the first generation Char-broil IR Grill, called the "TEC" series (named after the company that developed the technology. I love it, but it has been redesigned since then by Char-Broil due to the problems that many buyers had with the IR burner. I use the IR burner for one of two things- searing the meat (and then finish it on the regular burners), and slow smoking of wet wood chips laid right on the glass shield. It has been great for me.
