New Grill - Cooking Surface

I just bought a new grill yesterday. Am I supposed to do anything to the cooking surface before I start cooking food on there?

What material is the grate manufactured from? If it's stainless steel or porcelain-enameled iron, I'd just hit it with some olive oil or spray Pam and go to town. If it's something like raw cast iron, then you should probably season it first.

Some would tell you to clean it, but I always "clean" my grill by setting it on high for 10-15 minutes after I finish cooking. It burns whatever is left over right off. I'd set it on "high" for a little while and then start cooking large amounts of meat. I will be over soon.

Yeah, it's stainless. I think tonight will just be some chicken. Maybe something a little more exotic this weekend. You're welcome to swing by.....it's $20 for each kid you bring with you.

You should season any grill before you use it (maybe big green egg excluded). You should light a fire and let it burn for at least four hours at 250 plus degrees. You should then clean out the ashes and wipe the grill down with cooking oil inside and out including the grates. The next time you fire up the grill, let it get hot and then brush the grates with oil again to keep food from sticking.
