New Golf Club Question

I'm trying to recommend a set of irons for a good friend who I'm trying to get to be as avid a golfer as I am. We're looking for something relatively inexpensive right now, just so we don't waste his money if he doesn't end up taking as keen a liking to it as I have.

What sets would you recommend? The price range would probably be no more than $300 right now, unless you know of some sort of incredible deal he just can't live without.

Your help is, as always, appreciated.

go to instant replay and look for some x14s or some pings.. that price kinda limits it..

after he gets some clubs... i am available for lessons for $149.95 an hour. today and today only.

On a related note, I told myself I'd gfet a driver when I could consistently hit my 3-wood in the fairway. Now, I broke 90 for the first time a few weeks ago and I want to reward myself with a new (used) driver. I'm hoping to spend 50-75 bucks. What will be my best bang for the buck? Hoping to get something pretty forgiving (like my wife!)

regarding the irons, I got an old set of cavity backs at Play it again Sports for $20 and I am able to very much enjoy the game with them for beginner clubs. Maybe if I ever hit in the 70's I'll splurge on some good used irons...

K-Man:

Check out callawaypreowned.com or even ebay. You can find some cheap, used clubs. If you're in Austin, head to Instant Replay Golf.

Your bud should buy some used Tommy Armour 845s, as they still are a great value and a very good starter club.

For $75.00 you can't really buy a driver that takes advantage of the newer technologies. The best deal going is probably the TM 580 for $200.00 new.

They have new 845s at Golfsmith with a SW and LW thrown in for free for $199.

I've been bugging the **** out of him to buy these -- found a great deal on a putter for him last week. Thanks for your recommendation suttree, I'm hoping that helps to sway him.

1 2nd the recommendation for 845s. I have them and love them. $199 is hard to beat and they swing great.

Does anyone know of any good value websites? I just found Wholesale Golf Equipment and they look like they have some pretty good deals.

I'd prefer to buy new if possible -- I'm looking at either a Taylormade 540XD/580XD or a Titleist 983E. Any thoughts on those two or something similar?

Finally got down to golfsmith and got fitted and tried a bunch of used drivers. i ended up choosing a TM 320TI for $70 bucks. I hope it works out, it felt great on the range.

It sucks to be 34 and get recommended an old man's club. They said I should get 10-11 degree loft and regular stiffness. I was intentionally swinging pretty easy. Oh well, in theory I'd rather hit 250 down teh middle every time than 300 and lose a few balls; but when you get out on the course it's hard not to rare back and swing.

Nice recommendations so far on the drivers and irons....anyone have any suggestions for a 'cheap' putting solution? I played yesterday and I putted like I've never seen a golf ball in my life. It made me remember why I have yet to crack the low 80's (although I shot a 94 yesterday after 2 years away).

I've been wanting to get a new putter b/c the one I have been using is extremely heavy on the end and I feel like I lose 'touch' on my putting. I can't tell just how hard I'm swinging or making contact with the ball. It makes for a very stressful afternoon when the other aspects of the game are working ok

Anyone? Something light with a good feel?

Seemed like Golfsmith had most of their putters on special a few weeks ago; might want to check them out. If you can get an Odyssey blade, that'd be quite a pick-up.

Mostly, just go by feel. And this may just be me since I'm short, but I find that with a 34" or 33" putter, I can stand over the ball a little better. Standard putter length is only 35", but the difference (for me) feels like a lot more.
