New flooring

Okay, here's our dilemma:

We have a back room that is pretty large and L-shaped. Currently, it is all carpeted, but we are considering changing floor covering. The house is pier and beam. Under the carpet on the short leg of the L is a layer or two of linoleum and then hardwood (white oak I think) and we have a pool table in this area. Under the carpet on the long leg of the L is the same couple of linoleum layers and old porch board. Therefore, we have a bit of warp/sag in this portion (though not too much).

What I'm looking to install is something that can handle the pool table weight, but will be waterprrof (for the dogs) and also non-slick. Because of the lack of flatness, I figured that stone tile was probably out. We have been considering cork, anyone have experience with that?

Any suggestions from the HornFans illuminati? Also, if the surface might happen to come in some shade of burnt orange, that would be a huge plus.

You don't necessarily have to rule out tile, but it would probably take a good bit of prep work. The lack of flatness isn't an issue as much as the stability of the wood subfloor. You can use extra mortar or leveling compound to level out warped spots, but If there's flex in the subfloor you'll end up with cracked grout and possibly broken tiles. If the subfloor is solid (little to no creaking when you walk on it), tile could handle the weight of the pool table.

Sorry, no experience with cork.

You could always pour a thin layer of lightweight concrete or similar poured material and then stain (burnt orange, perhaps?). It would take into account any shifts in the floor and can have expansion joints in it so it can move dynamically as the house shifts.

Also, there is a particular type of carpeting/flooring that comes in the squares similar to tile, but you lay it in like lego blocks. The beauty of the system is that if you ruin a square or two you simply pull them out and replace them. Pretty neat. I'll find some backup info on that for you.

Cork flooring can be easily marked my doggy mistakes I think. There's a neat flooring place on Lamar at Oltorf called "castle flooring" I think that has some of the coolest tile/ flooring options I've ever seen.

The stuff I've read about cork is that you need a fairly level subfloor. I put a post on here a few weeks ago asking about it, but didn't get a response.

/ Nice work. That's the stuff. May not be what he's looking for, but it's an option.

And don't go through Lowe's or Home Depot. Contact the manufacturer and ask who their local suppliers are. Chances are you can get a better deal that way.

I recently looked into cork flooring. It does not do well with dog paws if their nails are too long. It does not do well with anything sharp. It tends to wear out pretty fast. These are the things the flooring stores told me. *shrug* Looks great, but sounds like it is not so durable.

There's also bamboo if you're interested in a wood-like flooring, but want something different.

However, Oblood, I recommend going the stained concrete route myself.
