I bought under the guise and under the band's own admission that they were trying to make a U2 type record. If judging by that criteria color me unimpressed at the moment.
I think what happened is they were trying to make a U2 record, and by "trying" to do that very thing it is all forced and not "real". The best albums are those where the band goes in its own new direction and creates something that captures where they are as a band at the moment. trying to capture what others have done successfully is not IMO the best way to go about it. Certainly a band can create something good when being "influenced" by someone, or someone elses work, but trying to recreate it will never work. Coldplay tried to recreate something that is just not there for them.
