I went. The line was long (25min) but it's free beer, so I can't complain. They have three types: Pale Ale, IPA and a WIT. I liked the WIT best. It was flavorful, but not overwhelming. I tastes Banana and Clove. It seemed they just tried to make a solid wheat beer, and not anything fancy or gimmicky. They succeeded. Probably the only one of their brews I would buy.
Pale ale was good, not spectacular. I must admit, I am not a fan of pale ales though, so don't take this as gospel. I would drink it again, and enjoy it, but I wouldn't buy it myself (It's just there are beers I like more)
Since I don't normally like pale ales, I normally don't like IPA's. If you like IPA's you will probably like this one. All I could taste was grapefruit.
I like the WIT, so I will be interested some more whenever they brew up some more varieties (porter, brown, red, amber, etc).
I went, too. Long lines. They should have been more prepared.
I had the IPA, and it was terrific. A little young -- somewhat cloudy -- but very balanced and not excessively hoppy like most IPAs these days.
I would say (512) should do well in the local beer market. (That said, I am not a huge fan of Austin brews, particuarly those from Waterloo, Copper Tank, and Independence.) I'd put it up against Real Ale's best offerings. Good luck to (512) Brewing Company.
I got there early so the lines weren't as long. They should have had more beer stations and maybe some music outside for the people hanging out.
I'm a fan of Pale Ales and IPAs. I liked the Pale best. The IPA needs work. It was cloudy and tasted like my homebrew. The Pale is something I'd drink regularly, though.
It seems like the guy knows what he's doing so I'm sure they'll be successful. It's good to have local choices.
Kevin is a good guy and a UT grad, as the website shows.
He's sharp and his dad has always been a heck of an entrepreneur, so I think he will do well. It's funny that he's selling beer to Crown and Anchor and some other places that we used to haunt in college a little bit.
His wife told me that they only sent out 125 email invites, so word of mouth, etc really traveled fast. That's why they didn't seem very prepared -- there's a big difference preparing for 200 or so when probably 500 or more showed up.
I look forward to trying them all. I like how individual taste and preference was demonstrated here. Each beer had a fan with good reasons why they liked it. That is enough for me to try each one with an open mind.
I miss Celis being brewed here. Just thought I would add that.
Yea, you all must not have been traumatized as a kid by eating one of the grossest, bitterest grapefruit ever. I haven't enjoyed grapefruit ever since. I could have categorized the flavor as bitter and mildly citrusy.
It's hard to beat a good grapefruit. I once went to florida and saw grapefruits laying around under the trees. Out of curiosity I cut one in half with my pocketknife and squeezed some juice into my mouth. It was one of the best things I have ever tasted in my life. Maybe the best. I have since learned that some trees produce sour fruit, but I like a hint of grapefruit in IPA.
