My dad went to high school with Parker in San Angelo. The Fess Parker Winery in California has some very good wine too.

One of my wife's college roommates was married at his winery near Buellton, CA. Incredibly pretty vineyard and grounds.

I still have my Davy Crockett coffee mug from the 50's, but the coonskin cap is long gone. That show was a big deal. RIP Mr. Parker.

Biltmore in North Carolina is a profitable working winery. It was one of the Vanderbilt mansions, You can find Anderson Cooper there checking out the Cuban grape pickers.

RIP, Fess. You never had to fake the accent.

Another former Horn actor from that era is Ron Ely. He played Tarzan in some of the 60s versions. He's who I remember as Tarzan because I was a little kid at that time. He also played Doc Savage in the 70s movie about the 60s comic book character.

I read in Alcalde (might have been somewhere else) that he played football at Texas in the 50s, but I can't find him listed anywhere official. Maybe he was a walk-on tackling dummy.

Ron Ely? No ****? I was an avid Tarzan viewer and Doc Savage was my favorite movie back in the day. Used to collect the comic book & when they brought out that movie... well, suffice to say there was no keeping me away from it. Wow... haven't seen it in many years.

Thanks for the memory jog.

I remember getting Fess Parker's autograph at halftime of the '68 Arkansas game on the track behind the Longhorn bench. He signed quite a few that night.

The Alcalde had a publication a few yrs back that had famous former Longhorns, and remember Fess Parker, Ron Ely, among others listed--also the guy who was on Magnum PI--what was his name?? Higgins, was his name on the show..,

Higgins of Magnum PI was played by John Hillerman, born in Denison, TX, and attended UT for 3 years before joining the USAF. The accent was fake... He was also in High Plains Drifter, The Last Picture Show, and Blazing Saddles, where no fake accent was necessary.

I think Eli Wallach was in High Plains Drifter as well. I know he was in several of the "spaghetti westerns" starring Clint Eastwood.
