Netflix switches to Blu-Ray

certainly, this doesn't mean that they will not provide standard DVD's? If so, I've no reason to keep my account.

Is this just a decision based on HD quality recordings?

The Netflix effect is huge for me. This could sway me to get BluRay player. Of course, if they offered online HD content, they could sway me to get neither.

You might as well buy a PS3. They cost the same as a stand alone blu ray player and are easily updated as the standards continue to change. They are also rated as one of the best blu ray players.

Not that this is much of a format war anymore but how long until Video On-Demand enters the fight...? Like someone said - if online HD downloading catches up, are people still going to be renting/buying DVDs?

I know there are obstacles with HD downloads, but I don't have a Blu-ray or HD DVD player (yet) and the vast majority are regular DVD-ers who haven't made a choice either. Was it Cox who's gonna introduce HD on-demand downloads of titles on the very same day of its physical DVD release? I want a Blu-ray player bad but I will still wait.

The bandwidth to support full-scale HD content will not be available for years, if even that (unless the US decides to wake the F up and compete with the rest of the world in the high-speed internet market). ABC claims to have HD content, and they seem to have done a fairly good job streaming so far, but even still it is not FULL-scale HD...

And yes, the PS3 is a godly bluray player. I just watched season 3 of Lost on it and the Seasonplay feature was allsome (get the bluetooth remote on Amazon, though).

FWIW, the bandwidth required for streaming HD in 1080i varies from 15-19 megabits per second.

OTA digital 1080i can be up to 19.2 megabits per second. HD channels on satellite and cable tend to be on the low end of that (sometimes as low as 7mb/s).

Time Warner in my area offers 7 and 10 mb/s - so they are still off by quite a bit on being able to deliver HD over the internet.

Well, it looks like Blu-Ray is the winner. With Best Buy and now WalMart completely bagging HD-DVD we finally have a true winner.

Time to go buy the blu ray players

I guess I will finally buy a PS3. Where is the cheapest to get 'em? Online? Wait for one of you to have a party and take it as a parting gift?

Walmart and Best Buy have also announced that they will be phasing out HD DVD in support of Blu-ray. this will take a few months but when those to pull the trigger, that should be the last nail in the coffin in this format war. Also right before CES Sony gave permission for porn to be put on blu-ray, one of the trade magz we get showed some of the new releases to come out next month.

Thx Kev. I will now discover what is and what is not a good price. I expect them to go up now, however, with the latest developments.

Are they pretty sturdy or do they break a lot?

I will hang up and listen.

Prices should keep coming down. There was a $100 price drop a few months ago. There's an 80gb and 60gb model. The 80gb model will play most ps2 games and 60gb won't. Other than hard drive size, that's the only difference between the two. They seem to be pretty reliable, there's no red ring of death problem like the Xbox 360's have.
