Netflix price increase

I was curious what those that have Netflix plan on doing regarding the announced pricing change that goes into effect September 1st - which by some accounts is about a 60% increase over current rates.

I currently have the "3 at a time" and streaming, but not sure if I'm going to go strictly DVDs, strictly streaming, or cancel it all together. Their streaming library seems to be lacking many movies I want to see and not necessarily fairly recent releases. I do have Amazon Prime which includes "free" streaming, but their library is even more limited and can't be streamed on my XBox 360.

We have one at a time and streaming and not sure what we are doing yet but not both. I think there are more movies I rather see with the DVDs but my husband watches some stuff on streaming. We might quit all together and use RedBox when we want a movie

My bill actually went down a little. I had the 5 plus streaming and blu ray, but had dropped to 4 (and probably should drop to 3), but the rate now is about $2 cheaper I think.

Still a great service and they do have good availability on streaming, but I'd like to see them keep beefing that up!

i just started the "free month" of Netflix streaming and I am not real impressed so far. The newer movies just "happen" to only be on DVD, which is another $7.99/month. I think I am going to cancel in August. Was that price increase just for DVD or were they trying to claim increased costs to streaming too?

we had 1 and streaming. we stream a lot of kids stuff so we will probably drop the 1 at a time and keep the streaming for now. we might drop both to see if they will offer us a deal.

Third Coast,

Like you I had 3 DVD & streaming, but I've had the same feelings abt streaming for awhile: older films, I seldom used it. So I immediately - like 5 minutes after I rec'd their email notice - dropped streaming, keeping the 3 DVD whic is still a pretty good deal.

I can't imagine what their postage bill is, and I'm sure that streaming is all they will offer in a few yrs, but for now they can take that price increase and stick it where the sun don't shine.

Yeah., I'll probably just keep the 3 at a time. The streaming is a nice add on for a limited catalog, but I can't see paying extra for it.

I have not had cable for several months and am totally used to it now. I would feel like a sucker if I had to pay for it again, to be honest. I am only getting Netflix streaming and now it is to be cheaper. For recent movies I just hit up Redbox or my local video store (I Love Video).

The savings I make by not having that cable bundle (dropping cable and phone line) more than makes up for the extra buck for a movie at a cool local store.

TV has hdmi, I can record things like a dvr if need be and can access any program any time legally. And I save a thousand or so bucks a year. Win.

I was pretty upset. I have been a member for over a year and don't like my rates going up the same a new members. When I joined the free streaming was even more limited but it was free with your membership. Now they are basically charging for the streaming at nearly the same rate as a 1 or 2 DVD only membership. My membership is 1 DVD at a time with streaming so my rates are nearly doubling. I think I am going to get rid of free streaming. I like having the option but the selection doesn't include many new releases and these are the ones I am generally interested in watching. I think they should have let longer term members keep the free streaming. Or they should just allow everyone to stream a certain # of movies free each month.

But without Netflix we wouldn't have Hulu and google + I guess.

One other thing about Netflix that might be worth noting. While it’s true they don’t have a lot of the recent or ‘popular’ films, I’m actually kind of glad of this because it’s encouraged us to take a look at many other films that never had the budget or promotional efforts that some films do, and that we would never have known about otherwise. There’s some really great work out there if you’re willing to spend some time exploring.

^ But the films that fall into that category except that I do know about them and have a hard time finding them - Netflix never has those either, for the most part.

NF does have a very good collection of silent films and a great collection of foreign-language films which I probably wouldn't have ever seen if they didn't have the one month delay on new releases (which is not their idea).

Very good point Mesohorny. I was never that keen on subtitles, but have seen a number of rather obscure foreign films that were very good. Most of which I would have missed without the streaming option.

i find their streaming feature extremely clunky, hard to manage and difficult to do specific searches.

it's a tad easier if done from a pc/laptop instead of through your TV.

Still, how the films are organized, how they are presented in your "instant que" and "recently watched" is cumbersome.

for instance.. i have Ichi the Killer plopped right next to Backyardigans. Try explaining that one to your 5 year old!

Planning on cancelling this month now that I found out Blockbuster online has unlimited in-store exchanges (we live about 2 minutes away from one) with the one-at-a-time plan for $13 a month. The streaming through Netflix was great for catching up on tv shows we had never seen, but we hardly ever use it anymore, and the list of things I want to watch instantly has dwindled.
