Nekia Jones

I've seen this young lady play three times in person, and each time over the span of 2 years I saw her improve a different part of her game. That off the top tells me one thing, that she is a worker. Its very rare to see someone w/ that size and frame be able to handle the ball as well as she does. I always thought she had D-1 potential, because she is a true matchup nightmare. The only takeaway I have is regarding her ability to guard elite D-1 talent. She would be an undersized post, or a slow wing. So hopefull KA has a heck of a defensive scheme for her. But make no mistake, what she does on offense more than covers her liability on defense.

PS
Another positive, if you look at that video you'll notice that she scored up and over Manuvel's Brianna Turner. Widely regared as the #2 prospect and best defensive player/Rebounder in her class. Imagine what type of damamge they could do together.

No one's going to push her around that's for sure.

5-11 is short to play in the post but, presumably, she is capable of playijng on the perimeter as she is listed as a wing. She can certainly score inside and we know of another undersized post that did well here at UT (Stacy Stephens).

Welcome to the 40 Acres, Nekia.

I do wonder about this quote:

She's a very interesting prospect.

At the 2012 State 4A Track & Field championships, she finished 2nd in both the Shot Put and Discus. At the 2011 State meet, she won the Shot Put and finished seventh in the Discus. So, pure strength is obviously a plus.

Here are some articles I found on Nekia:

She is a hoops and track & field teammate of 2013 guard/sprinter, Bealoved Brown, who has been offered a track scholarship by Coach Kearney; her specialties are the 100m and 200m. Brown is the sister of 2014 DB football recruit, Tony Brown, who Texas likes a lot. LSU big competition for both of them.

I do wonder about that quote also, Babhorn; I'm assuming they just overlooked VanderZee. With Cokie and Kayla both now listed as seniors, we have up to four openings for 2013. VanderZee and Jones take two of those spots so there are still two openings for that class if the staff decides to use them.

I think Txnos has it right in that Lilley is not in Hoopgurlz database.

If Nekia can handle the ball like those pics suggest and that writeup states, she will be a monster matchup on the wing for the Horns.

It almost seems like she can play a Point Forward type role, similar to the that of men's player, Royce White on the Iowa State team this past season; believe the Houston Rockets drafted him . .

Welcome, Nekia. As far as the rankings go, this has to be the first time ever no players from Texas are ranked in the top 30. Contrast it with 2012, with three in the top 10 and six top 30 (or 2009, with Griner, Bone and Reed all top 5). Imani Wright is the top in-state prospect at #31. Looks like there are a total of ten Texas recruits in the top 100.

31 - Imani Wright
48 - Arjane'e Alix
53 - Diamond Lockhart - TEXAS TECH
56 - Jada Terry - A&M
58 - Nekia Jones - TEXAS
64 - Christen Inman - NORTHWESTERN
78 - Jada Butts - TCU
82 - Breanna Hayden
87 - LaBrittney Jones - ARIZONA
99 - Candace Adams - NORTH TEXAS

Only three of ten still available. Impressive class for Cedar Hill with three players (Terry, Jones and Adams) all on the list.

As far as additional recruits for the Horns, I believe we're being considered by #10 Scaife, #17 Jackson and #31 Wright.

pretty impressive ranking for Nekia. Looks like the coaches got a steal with her. Still have two more spots if the coaches fill all available spots in 2013. Another post and SG/PG would be nice.

So far, here's the verbals for Big 12 schools from the ESPN 2013 top 100:
[pre]
Rank Ht. Pos Player Grade College High School

#33 5-8 PG Jadda Buckley 95 ISU Mason City (IA)
#34 6-2 F Teanna Muldrow 95 WVU E. Orange (NJ)
#53 5-6 PG Diamond Lockhart 94 TTU Red Oak (TX)
#58 5-11 W Nekia Jones 94 UT Ozen (TX)
#66 6-0 F Katelyn Loecker 93 OSU McPherson (KS)
#78 5-8 G Jada Butts 93 TCU Lewisville (TX)
#81 5-9 G Karyla Middlebrook 93 TTU Blue Springs South (MO) [/pre]

Good recruit!
Another D.Adams all over again.
Much better ball handler though.
She will be fun to watch at Texas.

If she played primarily in the post, I would agree with the Danielle Adams comparisons. But she is primarily a perimeter player, so it's difficult to compare her to Adams. I don't think there is another player with her size that plays effectively on the perimeter.
