Negotiating with a contractor

New homeowner question: I've gotten two bids to have the interior of my house repainted. One estimate is about 20% higher than the other, but I have more confidence in the more expensive one (both have good reviews on angie's list). Is is normal/acceptable to negotiate on price with a contractor where you have multiple estimates?

I would say it is normal and slightly acceptable. Just go back to the one you want to use and tell him you've got a price lower than his. Mention only percentages. Do not tell him what the other price was, this is called bid shopping and highly unethical.

Just let him know that you want to use him, but based on his price you can't b/c of your budget. Can he lower his price any or ask him to give you his best deal. See what he comes back with and then take his offer if you can still afford it.
