Negotiating a voluntary severance package

I was at my last company for 16 years with no bad reviews. I got an involuntary severance package that consisted of a last paycheck and vacation pay and health insurance stopped on the spot. Let me know when you plan to leave so I can send a resume in.

I've never heard an an employee initiated voluntary severance package. The company always initiates these from my experience.

If an employee walked in the door and asked this the policy would be to accept their resignation and ask if they plan to stay for 2 weeks.

Unless they are downsizing and letting folks go, they aren't going to negotiate a voluntary severence. Instead they will take it as a resignation and they will tell you to have a nice day

You're joking, right?

As someone mentioned unless there is announced plan to downsize and their looking for volunteers, you're SOL.

As someone that deals with this every so often from the employee relations standpoint, I get a chuckle when people try this move. It never ends well. Especially in the current economy.

count me in the group that has never heard of this before.... at least not in the general corporate environment.

Are you in athletics? Like, maybe a football coach at a nearby university? Say, in Brazos county? At any rate, if you are under contract for multiple years for lots of money, then you might be able to negotiate some sort of voluntary severance or buyout. Otherwise, everyone else is correct in that you will likely be shown the door immediately upon broaching such a subject.
